The Trader Joe's Companion: A Portable Cookbook Review

The Trader Joe's Companion: A Portable Cookbook

I have used Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's for going on two years now - hands down it's my favorite cookbook and I use it several times a week. Most of my go-to dishes are from that cookbook. I was thrilled when I read an article about this new one coming out and snatched it up. I really liked the idea of a "portable" cookbook for taking to the store with you - just stick it in your purse and consult it as you go through the store picking up ingredients. I can't tell you how many times I would stop by TJ's on the way home from work and wished I had some recipes with me rather than randomly picking up products. The size is kind of like those wine guides - tall and narrow - so it definitely is compact and very cute. The recipes are more of the same quick and easy type as before, with all kinds of cuisines. I had discovered the Simply Quiche recipe on their TJ blog actually, and it's here in this book - it's one of those recipes that is fantastic and gets even better as you try your own variations. Lots of great salads too. The Coffee Chocolate Fudge is a-mazing and addictive. Keep 'em coming!

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time
Average Reviews:

These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

For the legions of harried moms who have tossed in the dishtowel on cooking healthy meals (or any meals!), the easiest-ever guide for bringing super nutrition back to the kitchen. Getting dinner on the table night after night can be a challenge. So it's no surprise that busy moms often rely on fast food, takeout, and convenience meals like macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and fries. The kids love it but the drawback is that little twinge of guilt moms feel every time they feed their family another not-so-healthy meal.At the end of the day, many children end up with a poor diet high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories … a major factor in the rising rates of obesity. Finally, here are realistic guidelines designed to give families a healthy meal makeover. The Moms lay out a 5-Step Meal Makeover Plan, explaining how to market good nutrition to kids, establish food rules, and make life easier in the kitchen. In The Best of the Bunch chapter they reveal which brands of kid convenience foods–hot dogs, frozen pizza, and more–are the best tasting and most nutritious ones out there. The Moms show how to stock a healthy pantry and whip up delicious anytime meals using pantry staples. They even serve up 120 reworked recipes for family favorites such as Fast-as-Boxed Macaroni & Cheese, Squishy Squash Lasagna, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sweet Potato Fries, and Chocolate Pudding with Toppers.

What Can I Bring? Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor) Review

What Can I Bring Cookbook (Cake Mix Doctor)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a good cook and baker, but every time I have to bring something to a get-together, I end up obsessing over what to bring. I fall back on the same old things so much that I get bored, even though people seem to enjoy what I bring. Recently, I have been asked to bring food for various organizations/activities--probably at least once a month. This book, which is under $20.00, is well worth the price. It has more than 200 recipes, and there is a very good variety of recipes, including vegetarian ones or ones that could be easily made vegetarian/vegan. That's important to me because I have a vegetarian daughter. It is great that the author provides information on how to increase the amount of servings if practical, and provides a time-line of how long to expect to take to make the dish. Her notes on "how to tote" the dishes are helpful, since getting the dish there intact is important. There are some recipes at the end of the book for gift-giving and they will be wonderful for Christmas gifts. I like that the author did all my trial-and-error work for me--testing what goes over well at a pot-luck, is fairly simply to make, and travels well. I want to buy more of her books after purchasing this one, because her recipes are "real life, without too many exotic ingredients, and food that people would actually eat.

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes Review

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very pleased with this book: it is simple, the recipes can easily be modified, and best of all: there are shopping lists. I find that a large part of my meal executing woes are caused by not having time to plan and make lists. The foods are very middle of the road: not too gourmet, not too many processed foods. A couple meals a week are vegetarian, but carb watchers can add a fish fillet or chicken or something to the meal easily. Lots of veggies are included too. After purchasing a similar book that ended up suggesting I make "duck tacos" this book is a winner. Tip: take it to an office supply store and have the cover laminated and have it spiral-bound for easy use.

7-Day Menu Planner For Dummies Review

7-Day Menu Planner For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a woman "of a certain age" and married for 20+ years, I have been cooking for a long time. I admit, I am far from gourmet: I don't specialty shop; I don't watch the TV cooking shows or reality shows starring angry chefs and their desperate-to-please minions; glossy gourmet food and recipe magazines make me nervous.
I do have skills. I have one small shelf of cookbooks in my kitchen. I can cover the basics, having more or less successfully fed and nourished a healthy family of five for some time now. Culled from a 25-year-old, well-worn copy of the cooking classic: BETTY CROCKER'S COOKBOOK (1987), family magazines and, in more recent years, recipe searches on AllRecipes.com for the iPhone and iPad, I have compiled my very own cookbook: a mish-mash of photocopies, hand-written classics and typed recipes, all carefully preserved in plastic page protectors and haphazardly "filed" in a white, plastic-coated (easy wipe!), 3-ring binder.
However, having said all of that:
Even with my vast and very practical culinary knowledge and experience, I love, Love, LOVE Susan Nicholson's 7-DAY MENU PLANNER FOR DUMMIES! An instant new-NEW classic, this book should be a treasured kitchen bible for every man, woman or young adult trying to prepare and serve nutritious, delicious, affordable and do-able meals for a family, couple or even healthy meals for one.
Susan Nicholson is a registered dietitian and creator of the 7-Day Menu Planner newspaper column, featured in major newspapers and in online syndication, too. She is a culinary professional and a talented writer with a lot of experience and a great sense of humor, which makes 7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies more than just another cookbook.
7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies gives you a year's worth of weekly dinner idea and recipes that "take about 30 minutes to prepare, contain an average of 30 percent calories from fat, and use common ingredients to save time and money." It is a well-organized and simple roadmap for menu planning, offering great recipes, practical instruction and tips, and a very consistent weekly plan of coordinated dinners: Family Night; Kid's Night (not just for children!); Express Meal; Budget Night; Heat and Eat; Meatless Night; and Easy Entertaining. I love the fact that the week's meals are coordinated to use ingredients in common and a central philosophy of reduce, re-use, recycle and re-format throughout the week's plan. (Trust me, *not* repetitious, you will not get bored!)
7-Day Menu Planner for Dummies makes planning and preparing meals less of a chore and more simple, easy, quick, healthy and delicious. Whether you are an old pro in the kitchen or a culinary "noob" (as my kids say), make room on your cookbook shelf for a new classic!

The Crabby Cook Cookbook: Recipes and Rants Review

The Crabby Cook Cookbook: Recipes and Rants
Average Reviews:

Working as a short order cook for a cantankerous teen who only likes cheese and chocolate could turn June Beaver into a mad housewife. Harper's fast and pretty darn good recipes give this crabby cook an easy, tasty and funny escape from our endless pasta and cheese menu. And if the kid won't eat it - great! - more for me. I'll hand the kid the can opener for the SpagehettiOs.

Introducing a very funny, slightly edgy, winning new kind of cookbook Jessica Harper-that Jessica Harper, star of Minority Report, Stardust Memories, Love and Death, Pennies from Heaven, and more-is a working mother of two who faces the same problems of every other woman who's the designated home cook: How do you feed a family of picky eaters when you're not crazy about being in the kitchen in the first place? A natural-born storyteller and terrifically engaging writer, she does what she's done all her life-entertain us-while at the same time offering 100 not just easy but really easy-to-make, really tasty recipes. Her stories are filled with charming crabbiness-of cooking early in the day for the two kids who eat only six things, then later for the husband who eats only about eight things, none of which share common ground with those first six; of inviting her mother-in-law for dinner and handing her an apron; of suffering HAS-Hostess Anxiety Syndrome-having the book club over and picking The Good Earth because it matches the neighborhood's great new Chinese take-out, so no cooking involved! She wants to give a Nobel Prize to the person who invented bagged salad, and she recounts a wonderful story of making homemade turkey pot pie for the very first time-its crust tasted like rosemary-scented Play-Doh-to serve to Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford. But crabby or not, she's found a way to make it work, and work brilliantly. The Crabby Cook is about how to change your food-i-tude-no more garnish guilt, for example, and why 'sort of homemade" is just as good as homemade (ie, knowing when to go all out with Pain-in-the-Ass Minestrone and when to settle for the almost-as-tasty Lazy-Ass Minestrone). It's how to identify those Miracle Foods-the stuff that everyone loves, like Gobble-It-Up Turkey Chili and Tony's Rigatoni. And even a whole survival guide-despite her HAS-to entertaining, including drinks, Whore's Doorves, Dip One and Dip Two, and My Big Fat Greek Platter.

The Biggest Loser Cookbook: More Than 125 Healthy, Delicious Recipes Adapted from NBC's Hit Show
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.

The PDQ (Pretty Darn Quick) Vegetarian Cookbook: 240 Healthy and Easy No-Prep Recipes for Busy Cooks Review

The PDQ (Pretty Darn Quick) Vegetarian Cookbook: 240 Healthy and Easy No-Prep Recipes for Busy Cooks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I have a 7 month old baby, and don't have the time or interest in spending an hour in the kitchen making meals. I need to get lunch and dinner on the table fast, and get on with it! Problem was, I was grabbing unhealthy stuff in a hurry and packing on some pounds. So when this book came out, I thought it would be the perfect solution--I could make quick, healthy meals that are flavorful and satisfying.
I have tried several recipes--the Chunky Tomato Rice soup, Hearty Black Bean Soup (so good, so easy), Veggie-Hummus Wraps (try those on a sun-dried tomato tortilla--MMMM!!) the Spanish Rice, English Muffin Pizzas, and the Crunchy Granola Peach Gratin. My husband, who is what I call a "Tag-Along Vegetarian", (not an official vegetarian, but I'm the cook, so that's how he eats) has gobbled up all these meals and asked for seconds.
Look, this is not a "gourmet" vegetarian cookbook. If you turn up your nose at "resorting" to bagged salad greens or frozen vegetables or tomatoes or beans out of a can, then this isn't for you. I have the Millennium cookbooks sitting on my bookshelf, and Deborah Madison, and Peter Berley, and they're all beautiful cookbooks that make for some wonderful food. But right now I need simple, fast recipes, and if that means some help from pre-washed spinach, so be it! And if you feel it's easier to modify a recipe by using an appliance, well duh! Go ahead! This cookbook is all about making vegetarian cooking work for you in your busy life.
The only reason I don't give it five stars is because I wish it was longer and in hardcover!
By the way, since joining the gym and cooking from this book, I've lost 8 pounds. Thank you Donna Klein!!!

For me, this is a perfect cookbook. I don't have a lot of room in my kitchen. I want meals I can cook quickly. The recipes is food that you pretty much throw together in a hurry. Even the more intricate recipes are easy. These are the kind of meals that women cooked in the 50s, '60s and '70s before the Food Network got middle America women (and yes men too) wanting to be gourmet chefs. If I had the time and especially the room, it would be fun to try more elaborate dishes. But for people who want something more than frozen meals, this is a great cookbook.

Everyday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast: 250 Easy, Delicious Recipes for Any Time of Day (Everyday Food (Clarkson Potter))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I subscribe to Everyday Food and use the recipes constantly. I've never made an Everyday Food recipe that wasn't really good. I went ahead and bought the cookbook because it was a really good price, even though they've all been in the magazine. Some cooks might think that the recipes are fancy or complicated by looking at the titles or photographs, but they're really easy, and use easy-to-find ingredients, even in a small town. I also like the fact that the recipes never call for processed ingredients, like cream of mushroom soup, etc. Also, some of the recipes venture out from typical family fare, and many might say that their families won't eat the food. My philosophy is that if your family is hungry, they will eat what you provide, unless you want to be a short-order cook every night. This book is arranged differently than the first book. Where the first one was arranged by season (which I happen to really like), this one is arranged by meals and courses. Also, in regard to a previous low-rated review because of the binding, mine arrived in fine shape.

With 250 tempting recipes to take you from breakfast all the way through dessert, Everyday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast is the indispensable collection that home cooks yearn for. Organized into familiar categories—including sandwiches and pizzas, appetizers, salads, soups and stews, pastas, main courses, and side dishes—this highly anticipated follow-up to the bestselling Everyday Food: Great Food Fast helps you whip up the perfect dish any time of day. Here is a book for the way we cook and eat now, with an emphasis on stretching meals (for example, leftovers from a roasted chicken are used to make a quick gumbo and roasted vegetables perform a second act as a vibrant pizza topping), turning to economical ingredients that deliver great results (such as flank steak, served with a piquant parsley-garlic sauce), and making healthier versions of comfort foods without skimping on flavor (like a lower-calorie chicken potpie). A section on enticing vegetarian main dishes as well as a roster of irresistible desserts round out this comprehensive collection. Here's a taste of what's inside: Breakfast: Jam-Filled French Toast Sandwiches and Pizzas: Eggplant and Mozzarella Melt Appetizers: Goat Cheese Crostini Salads: BLT Salad with Buttermilk Dressing Soups and Stews: Minestrone Pastas: Spaghetti Puttanesca Main Courses: Meatballs with Rosemary Vegetarian: Mushroom and Parmesan Risotto Side Dishes: Roasted Sweet Potato Fries Desserts: Gingered Blackberry and Plum Shortcakes Brimming with great time- and budget-saving tips as well as smart kitchen techniques, Everyday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast helps you use what you have on hand to make everyone's favorite foods. Homemade Christmas: Tried & true recipes, heartwarming memories and easy ideas for savoring the best of Christmas. Review

Homemade Christmas: Tried and true recipes, heartwarming memories and easy ideas for savoring the best of Christmas.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the book's main focus is as a cookbook with over 175 recipes, it also includes a small Handmade section with gift ideas along with a chapter to aid in Creating Christmas Memories.
For those unfamiliar with the ongoing series, the books are compilations of favorite recipes sent in by readers. The preparation times and skill levels range from easy to advanced, but the majority of the recipes are created by busy people who effectively squeeze holiday cooking, baking and entertaining into a schedule packed with life's other daily obligations. So, if you want to make crescent rolls or caramels from scratch, recipes are in the book, but so are plenty of recipes that include just a few ingredients, that can be whipped up with little notice or difficulty.
I tried the recipe for Festive Cranberry Salsa and it was delicious with corn chips. The Candied Maple Walnuts were a nice twist on the usual sweet nuts with maple syrup, brown sugar, salt, pepper and cinnamon as main ingredients. And, the Easy Salmon Spread was quick and tasty.
The chapters are Creating Christmas Memories, Cozy Morning Brunch, Simmering Soups and More, Warm & Welcoming Suppers, Farmhouse Christmas Dinner, Old-Fashioned Desserts, Cookie Jar Classics, Homemade Sweets to Share, Gathering with Friends and Handmade from the Heart. There are no photographs, but there are charming illustrations. The paper will unfortunately absorb spills, so using a cookbook holder would be a good idea if that is a concern. The spiral binding is ideal for keeping the book open on any page.
This book is a good gift for someone with little time to cook or prepare for the holidays, along with the fans of the series.

We first checked this book out from our public library to test it and now we can't live without it!
The recipes are delicious and real-life friendly. We do not have diabetes in our household, but want to put healthy nutritious foods on the table.

Park Avenue Potluck: Recipes from New York's Savviest Hostesses Review

Park Avenue Potluck: Recipes from New York's Savviest Hostesses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is so beautifully designed and photographed that it honestly could do double duty as a coffee table book. Having said that, and at the risk of sounding snobbish, the only thing separating this cookbook from your local community junior league cookbook is that this book has much better photography and does not come spiral bound. So, buy it for its looks or for the good cause it supports, but chances are you already have most of these recipes lurking in your cookbook collection.
I purchased this (rather expensive) book expecting to find it filled with exclusive recipes for fancy dishes served by the Park Avenue elite, but instead I found it to contain very approachable, common recipes, many of which I was already familiar with. That is not to say that the recipes aren't good: they are. The lemon & dijon chicken, the Paris iced tea, "Mexican" chocolate cake with a boiled chocolate icing and the "Aunt Janet's" beef recipe all turned out beautifully.
Bottom line: this book is filled with recipes by and for home cooks, whether your home's address happens to be on Park avenue or not.
