Fresh from the Farmers' Market (Reissue): Year-Round Recipes for the Pick of the Crop

I started frequenting my local farmer's market after a stint living in Greece, where shopping at the open-air stalls taught me how good produce COULD be. This book is a treasure for anyone who has access to great veggies or grows their own; divided by season, it's full of delicious recipes showcasing produce at its very best.
Everything I've made from here has been very good; I have a pot of the yellow split-pea soup with squash and kale in the refrigerator right now. I also really like the turnip and turnip greens soup, which lets you use both good things together. And then there's roasted asparagus, which I must make at least once a month throughout asparagus season.
The only reason I haven't given this book five stars is because there are too many things here I would not make. Fletcher's recipes can be a little too "restauranty" -- too elaborated, too many strongly flavored ingredients canceling each other out. Still, for magnificent food photography and good eating, plus nice tips on how to choose the best of the market, this book is hard to beat. A good addition to any cook's shelf -- and if it inspires you to patronize your local farmer's market, so much the better!

You have NEVER cooked like this. The first night I made REAL AUTHENTIC SHRIMP CREOLE & SWEET CORNBREAD made with coconut milk. This book is fun, easy to read and the recipes are most delicious. a MUST for those looking to get away from the boring. But also - not too exotic for those family members afraid to try new dishes (my kids) !
I recommend this book to new cooks as well as the experienced.

A Culinary Journey in Gascony: Recipes and Stories from My French Canal Boat Review

A Culinary Journey in Gascony: Recipes and Stories from My French Canal Boat

(More customer reviews)
I first picked this up at my library, expecting another in the growing genre of "lifestyle fantasy literature" -- you know, bohemian boomer quits rat race, goes abroad, buys quaint house (or boat), creates rustic & soul-satisfying alternative lifestyle and then =tortures= the rest of us by writing a glowing book about it... But now, Ratliffe's work is in a hallowed place on my cookbook shelf between Richard Olney's "Simple French Food" and "Lulu's Provencal Table." Like those books, Ratliffe's takes us deep into the heart (and soul) of a regional French cuisine, through timeless villages and fragrant home kitchens.Even if the book were recipes alone, it would be worth its price for the seasonal simplicity of "asparagus with scallions, mint and green garlic shoots," or "radish leaf soup." But Ten Speed Press has made it a feast for the hand and eye as well, with loving photos of the Garonne canal country and buff paper reminiscent of a sketchbook or travel journal. Few chefs write this well about the daily meditation of cooking, the inspirations, the happy accidents and the patiently learned techniques. Even if you never spend a night on the "Julia Hoyt," by the time you cook your way to "Flan au Floc" for dessert you'll feel you know this land and its people intimately.

These days I don't know anybody that isn't trying to save a little money. This book will help families do just that by teaching them how to substitute their "Fast Food" habit with a "Fast Food Kitchen" with the bonus benefit of creating memories around the dinner table with the family.
Sheri has given us tons of tips and along with several delicious recipes in this book. In fact, the recipes are so easy to make that my teenage kids have already cooked several of them and with great success. I think this book is a must have for every busy family and would also make a terrific gift for kids going off to college.
Bravo Sheri! You are helping us rethink how we spend our money and our time.
Sincerely,
Tracy Klehn

Professional Cooking Review

Great professional cookbook. Although this book is not for the home cook, the recipes can be modified for smaller portions just watch the seasoning. One thing to remember is that the recipes are fully tested but they are NOT standarized because they were written for instruction. What this means is that most of the recipes are not the classic versions but modified versions designed in order to instruct the student. My only complain, and I always have a complain, is the quality of paper which affects the picture quality as well. The paper seem too thin vs. in the previous versions, the paper was thicker. This happened also with a couple of the CIA books. I think this is a new trend with textbooks. Another thing I want to point out is that the Software that comes with it will not work on Vista. It only seem to work with Windows XP. Like other books that I purchase from Amazon, this book had the corners bended and the front cover was scratched. I think that Amazon should work on the this issue but overall I'm happy with the purchase.

Diabetes Without Drugs: The 5-Step Program to Control Blood Sugar Naturally and Prevent Diabetes Complications Review

Diabetes Without Drugs: The 5-Step Program to Control Blood Sugar Naturally and Prevent Diabetes Complications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a pharmacist gives Suzy a lot of credibility with many people. Few doctors or pharmacists bother to list side effects of medications. If they did a lot of people might be put off taking their medications. Suzy informs you in a balanced way. It's nice to see a pharmacist pointing out when natural therapies are superior to medications.
Suzy also discusses the link between natural products and medicines ie. medicines are usually just synthesised natural products and this synthesis is usually just for purposes of profit (you can't patent a natural molecule). The beauty of many natural approaches is that they lack the side effects of the synthetic version (Suzy explains some of the reasons why this may occur)... and if that's the case it's worth knowing.
Equally useful is knowing which things to supplement with if you are on medications. Suzy does a first rate job listing the vitamins and minerals that are depleted in the body by certain medications and suggests you supplement with these. This is sensible advice.
If you have diabetes then you owe it to yourself to read books like this which are fact/research based. They will give you strong insights into the causes and treatment of diabetes.
This book suffers from a few too many typo's. Please fix some of them?
More importantly there are a couple of factual errors that Suzi ought to correct. It was annoying to find the entire book referring to EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) as fish oils (EPA/DHA) and various other types of oils:
EFA's are defined oils the body can not produce. The only two EFA's are ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) an Omega3 oil (flax is one source of it) and LA (Linoleic Acid) an Omega6 oil (Sunflower is the most commmon source). It's a common error which many authors are making. Please someone stop and read a definition? Then get out a flow diagram of Omega3 and Omega6 derivative pathways? They show some very interesting things including that EFA's trigger your bodies production of anti-coagulants and anti-inflammatories... a very useful thing in diseases which have both a coagulation and inflammatory component.
Suzy mis-quotes Dr Michael Holick (a dermatologist) on VitD: Suzy recommends people stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm. Holick points out that it is only between 11am - 3pm that UVB is present and that's what you need to produce VitD. He does say you only need about 10 minutes and not to stay out too long. This was probably just a typo... but it would be nice if someone corrected it.
There are a few more things Suzy could have added to the book like the link between fructose/sucrose and uric acid... which then triggers inflammation and the inflammatory process is involved in diabetes.
You don't have to be diabetic to read this book as it has lots of useful information that's just as applicable to non-diabetics.
Well done Suzy.
:-)

Almost Meatless: Recipes That Are Better for Your Health and the Planet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From Caramelized Onion Meatloaf to Shrimp and Slow-Roasted Tomato Risotto; from Eggplant and Chicken Puttanesca Stacks to Springtime Spaghetti Carbonara, the authors (a former vegan and an unabashed carnivore) aim for more flavor with less meat, pleasing the eye as well as the palate in this attractively designed full-color paperback.
The book is organized by ingredient - fleshly protein ingredient. Boxed cooking tips, storage and shopping advice and occasional variations accompany well-organized recipes.
Most recipes are naturals for meat restraint - Corn and Cod Cakes, Chicken and Biscuit Pot Pie (whole wheat crust), Chili, while a few traditionally meat centered dishes - Philly Cheese Steak, Tofu-Turkey Sloppy Joes - require some veggie adjustment.
The authors include whole grains without belaboring the point and the whole family will greet the meals here with enthusiasm.

The Healthy Bird Cookbook: A Lifesaving Nutritional Guide and Recipe Collection Review

The Healthy Bird Cookbook: A Lifesaving Nutritional Guide and Recipe Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm by no means a parrot expert but do know a fair amount about nutrition. Honestly, I found this book lacking much *parrot specific* information at all. The author admits that most of the information is based on human nutrition info because not a lot is known about parrot nutrition. (Granted, if true, this isn't the author's fault ... except the book's title might be less misleading if it were "Recipes your Parrots Might Enjoy").
The book, though, was basically a listing of nutrients and their functions in the body, followed by a bunch of recipes that I could easily get from any cookbook or online. The most "novel" recipe suggestion was to leave the egg shells on the eggs in your parrots' recipes?
What I was hoping for were some guidelines about parrot nutrition, as compared with human nutrition. Maybe if, in addition to the recipes, there were some suggested feeding schedules (so one could get an idea about relationship between the parrots' needs for fat, protein, carbs, etc.) that would be helpful.
I did learn conures need less protein and more vitamin K than other parrots. Unfortunately, though, this book leaves me with no idea about how much protein and vitamin K "other parrots" need. Or carlories or carbs or ...
There were also some factual problems with this book. Banana peels may be contaminated with monkey urine? Maybe this was a joke but it didn't stand out as such, in such a "fact free" environment. Also, the bit about the dark part of fruit flesh, around the seed, being toxic? I can't find anything coroborating this online.
It was good that she spoke out against all-seed diets and promotes the idea of fresh, home-cooked food for parrots. The book provides a summary of nutrition information that I might pull out once in a while but only because this book isn't as heavy as my "real" nutrition book but otherwise, not that useful. We eat fairly healthy ourselves and we'll share our food with our parrot, in addition to added nuts and fruits. Other than trying to add some vitamin K to our future BCC's diet, nothing else different than we'd planned to do.
Wish I'd checked this book out from the library instead of spilling out the cash for it. Had I checked it out first, I definitely wouldn't have purchased it.

Lord Krishna's Cuisine: The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking Review

Lord Krishna's Cuisine: The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Vedic Vegetarian book, it contains no recipes that use garlic or onions. Two vegetables that are staples in other Indian cookbooks, and suprisingly through the substitution of other spice combinations, the recipes do not lack flavor at all.
Some of the dishes are hard to take on, but all are delicious. The information included here is indispensible, not just for the recipies, but for the explaination of countless spices, techniques and ingredients that one often wonders about in other cookbooks, which will often only clarify with an "Available in Indian Groceries" annotation. This book includes a list of actual sources for the spices, should the need arise to obtain black onion seed, and no one in Boseman has it... This lexicon of information makes it possible for one to improvise endlessly from the recipes provided, which I believe, are just samples showing the possibilities.
All in all, the combination of tasty recipes and the voluminous definitions, explainations and sourcing material make this an excellent cookbook, both for the cookbook collector, and the serious home gourmet.

After hearing the charming Nicole Aloni on NPR I immediately purchased this cookbook book. (I even was late to an appointment because I didn't want to leave the car until the interview was finished). I became especially intrigued with her 5 criteria for including any recipe in her book (such as "delicious and easy yet look like they took all day", and "traditional enough to appeal to your grandmother's palate, yet sophisticated enough to impress your new fashion designer daughter-in-law").
After trying several recipes, I can say without a doubt that this is my most treasured new cookbook, and I have already given several copies as gifts.
My absolute favorite so far is her recipe for Carole's Perfect Brownies. I was skeptical because over the decades I have tried many MANY brownie recipes. This one is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST EVER - using 3 kinds of chocolate. I have FINALLY found the ultimate chocolate dessert!
I actually shouldn't say I have a favorite recipe in the book come to think of it, because the Lemon Tart and the Risotto Dolce Scented with Cardamom and Orange are
sensational. The very easy Chocolate-Orange Cake was absolutely delicious - and very unusual.
The New Wave Spinach and Pomegranate Salad sounds great as do all of the unique salad combinations that Nicole lists as one of her many "extras".
I can't wait to try the mole poblano-Style chili with Beans and the Arugula Pesto Roast Lamb.
ORDER THIS BOOK NOW and then go to Nicole's website to check out her classes around the country. I can't wait until she comes to Los Angeles! THANK YOU NICOLE!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently purchased a set of waterless cookware and was disappointed by the limited accompanying recipes. I was delighted to find "Healthy Meat & Potatoes" by Charles Knight, and even more delighted once I received it.
The recipes are surprisingly easy, the ingredients healthy, and the tips on using waterless cookware invaluable. I also like to cook with wine, and was excited to find wine an ingredient in some of the more gourmet recipes.
Overall, this book has already become one of the favorites in my collection and I'd recommend it to anyone with waterless cookware who is searching for information on how to get the best use out it, or anyone who wants to eat healthy and enjoy doing it.

I have been off and on macrobiotic for years but sometimes just want more variety in my eating. This cookbook offers a bit more in the way of spices and jazzing up food than the traditional macro cookbooks I own. I appreciate the fact that he has a small section with a suggested list of seasonal daily menus so that I don't have to constantly come up with a balanced yin-yang meal on my own. The recipes are wonderful. There are recipes that I can barely read anymore, as I have made them so often and they are totally disfigured with blobs of tamari and other ingredients. If you like to eat simply and healthy with lots of variety, but still want to stick with the macrobiotic principles, this book is well worth getting.
