If you like the Chicken Soup For the Soul books, you will want to have the cookbook as well. This is your chance to really experience the stories as you read them and then try your hand at the rceipes. I can almost smell the aroma of fresh bread or pies as they are cooking. I have tried several already and have gotten rave reviews for the food, but it is even more fun to tell the story to the family as they enjoyed the dish. I am already thinking of one recipe that I would like to share myself and I know as you read and try the recipes, you'll have one to share also.

Fannie in the Kitchen: The Whole Story from Soup to Nuts of How Fannie Farmer Invented Recipes with Precise Measurements
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an educator who likes to use historical fiction with elementary students. Students love the story of FANNIE IN THE KITCHEN, and we have also used the book to talk about how cooking has changed over the years. I bring in old kitchen utensils from antique stores to show them. (Many kids can't identify a sifter, to say nothing of a butter mold! And when was the last time you saw a doughnut cutter??) We also use the book as a jumping off point to talk about math and measurements.
Although this is clearly a humourous, fictionalized take-off on a footnote to history, students and I also enjoy talking about how young Marcia must adjust to change, as her mother has a new baby. The way the illustrator depicts the developing relationship between Marcia and Fannie is delightful.
As the author note states, Fannie Farmer was one of the first to recommend precise measurements in cooking. What a fun way for kids to be introduced to this 19th century figure

Children of all ages will enjoy this book, especially if they love to grow plants. Growing Vegetable Soup is also woderfully illustrated. I used this book in a Literacy Bag in conjuction with a Peter Rabbit Garden created by my university. An activity that can be used with the book for young children would be a matching game--vegetable or tool picture to word.

Her latest volume represents a good overview of veg cuisine, apart from the absence of most meat substitutes likes seitan. The book contains a very good soup selection, with a variety of both simple and complex stocks upon which to build soups. There are numerous frittata recipes and good selections for winter and fall dishes, for those who want to eat seasonally. Yellow Squash and Rice Gratin and Potato and Chard Gratin stand out. A Tradition of Soup: Flavors from China's Pearl River Delta Review

A Tradition of Soup: Flavors from China's Pearl River Delta
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing I noticed about A Tradition of Soup is that is a beautiful book. It is a feast for the eyes. The North Atlantic Books production team deserves many kudos. The pages are oversized, printed on heavy coated paper. The photographs are excellent, most in full color and abundant.
In her Preface, Teresa Chan writes, "This cookbook is written to promote Chinese food and culture, and to promote health. It pays tribute to my kindred Cantonese people from the Pearl River Delta and to our soup tradition that explicitly links food to health and healing." The book is divided into four parts that indeed cover Chinese culture, healing traditions, history, and of course, food.
Part One introduces readers to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the tradition of soup, and the history of Cantonese people in two deltas: the Pearl River Delta in China and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California. The Cantonese people have a rich history in the California Delta region. As a co-founder of the Pacific Complementary Medicine Center and as a member of the Board of Directors of Jen Wah, Inc. both in Stockton, CA, Chen was able to draw on the accumulated wisdom of Chinese elders for the recipes and techniques in this book. In Appendix B the soup contributors are profiled.
Part Two focuses on the basics of Cantonese soups, techniques, and equipment. Of particular interest to me is the section about reconstituting dry ingredients. Since many recipes require dry ingredients, this is a critical step in the process. Also here is where I find a great marinade recipe and the discussion for preparing soup stock including "Top Stock," the all-purpose stock.
Perhaps the most fascinating section of the book is Part Three: Ingredients. Some are familiar, like chicken; others are exotic, such as wolfberry leaves. Color photographs are provided for the ingredients. Each ingredient is listed with its Western name, Mandarin and/or Cantonese pronunciation, and Chinese characters (Mandarin pinyin and Cantonese Romanization). The uses for each ingredients are explained as well as tips for choosing and medicinal values. This part of the book is subdivided into four groups: Animal Sources, Plant Sources, Medicinal Herbs, and Other Food Products.
The bulk of the book is devoted to Part Four: Soup Recipes. Naturally, following TCM practices there are recipes for the four seasons. This makes a great deal of sense for those persons devoted to eating locally produced food, it will be seasonal. There are also sections for all-season, vegetarian, medicinal, exotic, and expensive soups. Most recipes occupy a full page accompanied by a gorgeous, often full-page photograph of the soup in a serving dish. Recipes often begin with a brief description of the soup and its benefits. The ingredient list and clearly written instructions are followed by suggestions and variations when appropriate. The Soupy Snacks and Light Meals section is fun. There are recipes for rice soups, sweet soups, and noodle, wonton and dumpling soups.
If you are looking for "typical" Chinese restaurant soups, you will find Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup. Although of Sichuan origin, Chen includes Hot and Sour Soup because of its popularity. Many of the recipes remind me of soups served in small, family-run Chinese restaurants in East Bay area of San Francisco. While there were the usual types of soup available, there was also "Today's Soup." Often I had no idea what was actually in the soup, but it was always wonderful.
From beginning to end, A Tradition of Soup is a comprehensive reference work that is thoroughly engaging. People interested in health and nutrition will discover much of value here. The index is thorough. However, the design could be improved for easier scanning through the use of a smaller type and less leading in between lines. My only complaint is that some ingredients are not available in places without a significant Chinese population. Unfortunately the book does not provide Internet resources for obtaining many of the ingredients. Thankfully, many recipes do not contain exotic ingredients. My biggest problem will be choosing which of the delicious recipes to make first.

Through recipes that use time-honored medicinal ingredients, A Tradition of Soup provides a fascinating narrative of the Southern Chinese immigrants who came to the United States in large numbers during the last half century, the struggles they faced and overcame, and the soups they used to heal and nourish their bodies. Following the Chinese approach to health, Teresa Chen, who was born into a family of food connoisseurs and raised by a gourmet cook, groups the recipes by seasons and health concerns according to Cantonese taxonomy: tong (simple broths, soups, and stews), geng (thickened soups), juk (rice soups or porridges), and tong shui (sweet soups), as well as noodle soups, wonton and dumpling soups, and vegetable soups. Also focusing on dahn (steaming) and louhfo (slow-cooking) soups associated with good health, the book features fresh, natural, and seasonal food. A Tradition of Soup highlights recipes that serve a wide range of purposes, from gaining or shedding weight to healing acne and preventing wrinkles. While some ingredients may seem foreign to Western readers, most are available in Chinese grocery stores. To help readers identify and procure these items, Chen provides a beautifully photographed ingredients glossary complete with Chinese names, pronunciation, and detailed descriptions.

1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes: Easy, Great-Tasting Dishes for Everyone -- from Appetizers and Soups to Entrees and Desserts

I consider this an "advanced" cookbook. If you're a seasoned vegetarian & are looking for new, exciting dishes, then this may be a five-star book for you. If you're just beginning vegetarian cooking, or if you're looking for quick, easy vegetarian recipes, you may find this book somewhat daunting.
For example, though the book provides a brief glossary of foods you'll encounter in the recipes (like tofu, tempeh, fillo pastry, etc.), I would've appreciated some drawings or pictures or perhaps a little more explanation and encouragement regarding these uncommon foods. I'm a pretty experienced cook and yet I was still a little intimidated, charging blindly into soy proteins & foreign foods like this.
In addtion, many of the "simple" stews and casseroles described depend on one of the book's vegetarian stocks that require 4 hours' simmering time. Furthermore, many of the recipes ask for hard-to-find ingredients like "Mesquite-flavored cooking spray," "broccoflower florets," "sprouted wheat berries," "cactus paddles," and "fat-free half-and-half."
Also, I didn't care for the way the book was organized. As with the veggie broths, many recipes ask for ingredients like smoked tofu, potato pizza crust, sun-dried tomato pesto, chorizo, mushroom gravy, tortilla sauce, etc. that require you to flip to another recipe and take additional time to prepare.
Finally, recipes for condiments or accompanyments are tacked onto entre recipes, rather than given their own chapter. Subsequently, it may be hard to locate these recipes weeks or months later, when you want to use a particular sauce or chutney apart from the entre it was recommended for.
Complications aside, this book certainly does provide a wealth of vegetarian recipes that are both interesting and inspiring. I found it useful, though, to first learn about vegetarian cooking from a more basic cookbook, and now I return to 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes when I'm tired of the usual veggie fare.

Campbell's Creative Cooking With Soup: Over 19,000 Delicious Mix and Match Recipes Review

Campbell's Creative Cooking With Soup: Over 19,000 Delicious Mix and Match Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of my all time favorite cookbooks. My copy is 20 years old! I have both the softcover original and the hardback expanded version.
The recipes are set up with a list of ingredients, including mix and match for several items (i.e. you pick what type of soup, pasta, meat, cheese, seasoning, etc. from a list of suggestions). Any of their combinations are supposed to work well together. It's especially nice for novice cooks who are nervous of experimentation, as it really helps you gain confidence or have an idea of what to do if you are out of an ingredient.
I have tried SEVERAL recipes out of this booklet and almost every one of them has been very good. So far I have tried Mexican Style Appetizer, Chili, Pasta and Bean Soup, Easy Pot Roast, Stir Fried Beef and Vegetables, Souper Enchiladas, Meatball Stew, Chicken Paprika, Chicken Stuffing Bake (one of hubby's all time favorite casseroles), Pasta with White Seafood Sauce (one of the few recipes we didn't care for), Vegetables Oriental, and Broccoli & Noodles Parmesgan.
Even with that long list, there are still a lot of recipes that I want to try including, Cheese Stuffed Vegetables, Teriyaki Beef Kabobs, Baked Chicken Florida, Vegetable Lasagna, Skillet Potatoes, Savory Pilaf, and others.
I have five shelves of cooking books and this is by far one of my favorites. Overall the recipes are very easy and quick and mostly use common ingredients that I already have in my pantry and freezer. As I am sure you can tell by the list, there are plenty of "comfort" foods and what I think of as real home cooking. I would have to add the caveat though that for the most part I can't call them healthy recipes (although I make substitutions where I can like fat free mayo, Healthy Request cream soups, etc.)
My most recent recipe attempt was Best Ever Meatloaf and it was quite yummy.
I absolutely encourage you to try this book, especially if you are nervous about making substitutions. It will make you much more comfortable!!!

Sam the Cooking Guy: Awesome Recipes and Kitchen Shortcuts

I have been a fan of Sam Zien's for some time now. I love to cook for my family, but I would not say I am an expert in the kitchen. I have always wanted to be more adventurous with recipes, but never knew where to start. Sam's new book, Awesome Recipes and Kitchen Shortcuts, really surprised me in a positive way. This is not only a great recipe book, it is also a true cooking guide book that every food lover should own. Sam busts out of the box of traditional cookbooks in that he also teaches you how to have flexibility and enjoyment with the entire cooking experience. His book shows you how cooking and fun should be synonymous and that food should not only look good, but taste good! Oh, and I love his sauces. They taste awesome and they are a breeze to make. This book has changed the way I cook, completely!
