If you're like I was, you're looking through the various disaster preparedness books wondering which one is best. I have worked my way through many of the most popular books and offer a shared review of all of them here. I hope this comparison helps you make a decision. I should also point out that I researched nearly every disaster book out there and recently published the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family. If interested, search Amazon for the title. Onward with the reviews!
Book 1: Crisis Preparedness by Jack A. Spigarelli
Like many of the disaster preparedness books, this one begins by answering the question, "Why bother being prepared?" It also outlines a framework for being prepared that includes accumulating supplies, getting mentally and physically prepared, and having your finances in order. One thing I particularly liked was the emphasis on the importance of knowledge. It wasn't just about what items you need, but also what skills and knowledge you should develop. But this book is mostly about food preparation for a major disaster, with emphasis on having a year's food storage, milling your own grain, growing sprouts, home canning, dehydrating, freeze-drying, etc. There are detailed tables showing the calories of various foods including their protein, fat, and carbs. The final third of the book offers advice on other topics, including weapons, hand tools, clothing, energy, medical, sanitation, transportation, communications, and home preparation. The book concludes with a list of recommended books and a brief listing of companies that sell disaster preparation items. Overall, this is a very good preparedness book. I probably should have given it 5 stars, but I thought it went a bit overboard on the food plan. That said, it is the most comprehensive of the preparedness books.
Book 2: Preparedness Now! By Aton Edwards
This is another thorough disaster preparedness book, one that focuses more on emergency situations (fire, chemical attack, etc.). It is organized into brief chapters (some only a few pages) on a variety of important topics, including: water, food, shelter, sanitation, communication, transportation, and protection. It is also filled with many packing lists detailing what you should get in preparation. It introduces the e-kit (a very lightweight kit to keep with you) and grab-n-go bag with more extensive items. Final chapters of the book discuss various possible disasters, including earthquakes, tsunami, infectious diseases, chemical and bio warfare, crime, fire, and extreme weather. Some of the commentary is a bit questionable, but the technical content is good. Note the deficiency with this book is that it does not offer any detail on food storage.
Book 3: Disaster Preparedness for Dummies
First of all, this isn't a book. It's a DVD video. I wasn't paying attention when I bought it, and was a bit surprised when it arrived. I generally like the Dummies series. They are well researched and serve as a good summary. This DVD offers a lengthy video discussing many disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, etc.), briefly outlining how you might prepare for them. It also has an overview of how you should react in case of a terrorist attack (nuclear, chemical, and biological). But the advice is all very general, and is more like what you'd expect to hear from your local weather station. For example, the video repeatedly advises you to "stay calm" and "evaucate in an orderly fashion." The videos are high quality, but don't expect detailed outdoor survival tips or food storage suggestions. Everything presented is relevant and useful, but it feels more like a FEMA public service announcement.
Book 4: Emergency Food Storage and Survival Handbook by Peggy Layton
This book is broken into six main sections. The first section offers decent but very incomplete summaries on preparing for short-term emergencies. The second section discusses how to store and purify water. The third part talks about the logistics of setting up a food-storage program, and has some suggestions on how to store food. The fourth section details what types of foods you should store. The fifth section has blank inventory planning pages. And finally the last section has some recipes. About half of the 285 page book is either blank planning pages or simple recipes. The first half of the book is pretty good stuff, but I found this book to be incomplete. It does however offer some good advice on food storage.
Book 5: Organize for Disaster by Judith Kolberg
This book goes an entirely different direction than the other preparedness books. Emphasis is on understanding the federal resources (i.e. FEMA, Red Cross, etc.) available, creating a personal intelligence network, organizing essential documents, maintaining insurance coverage, listing a home inventory, preparing your house for disaster, basic first aid, and having a good family communication plan. There is also a good list of necessary items to have on hand that would suit many common disaster. I recommend this book for its common-sense look at disaster preparedness. However, it is not the only book you would need, because it doesn't detail food storage, water purification, heating, etc.. That said, it covers some topics that the other books overlook.
Book 6: Making the Best of Basics, Family Preparedness Handbook by James Talmage Stevens
This book is almost completely about in-home food storage and preparation. There is little discussion outside that (except for basic water issues). Many chapters discuss food in significant detail, to include things like grains, recipes, preparing sourdough breads/biscuits, dairy products, honey, sprouting, drying of fruits/vegetables. At the end of this book is a huge compendium of preparedness resources, telling where things can be purchased in every US state.
Book 7: No Such Thing as Doomsday, by Philip L. Hoag, revised in 2001
This book offers well-researched insights into disaster preparedness. Topics include water, food, heating/cooking, light, power, communications, medical, sanitation, and security. Those subjects are well done. However, much of the book reads like a bit of doomsday prediction, with many pages devoted to scaring the heck out of the reader... focusing on missile attacks, chemical dangers, nuclear war, radiation, decontamination, communist threat, etc. For me personally, I would have like to see more pages devoted to likely threats (e.g. hurricanes, floods, earthquake, blackout, fire, etc.). Also note that Amazon may not carry the latest version (updated in 2001), so you may want to buy directly from the author.
Book 8: When All Hell Breaks Loose, by Cody Lundin
This book falls somewhere between doomsday survivalism and practical disaster preparedness. It is a high quality publication, filled with illustrations and a color insert. My prediction is that you will either love this book or hate it. It does cover many of the basic topics (food, shelter, water, sanitation, light, first aid, self-defense, communications, and transportation). But the material is presented in such a way that it is very chaotic and difficult to read. There are distracting quotes and cartoons, as well as advice that is targeted more towards the end of civilization scenario. For example, he discusses how to wipe your bottom with a stick or other foreign object, how to cook up a rat, how to compost your poop, etc. It's all very interesting, but not particularly useful for say preparing for a harsh winter storm.
Overall, if you can only purchase three books, I would recommend Book 5, Book 6, and either Book 1, 2, 7 or 8. With those three, you should have a balanced look at common sense organizing, food storage, and emergency items to have on hand. If you can buy only one book, I recommend Book 1.
Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family" - just coming available on Amazon (July 2010).

This book is a very valuable resource for anyone who needs to know how to prepare food for someone (or yourself) who cannot chew or swallow well. It provides a clinical explanation of various conditions and then the book assists you with helpful solutions and recipes, as well as additonal source material. With it, you can locate providers of various kinds of additives that are used to thicken food - making liquids easier to swollow. Well worth the money. I purchased several books, but this is the best one.

This book provides a wide array of completely vegan sauces, sides, entrees, and desserts that are all extremely low in fat and all very easy and quick to prepare. Almost every one of the recipes that I've tried were excellent(and I've made almost all of them. Of special note are the baked goods and desserts that are vegan and fat-free (or very low fat) yet resemble their dairy and egg laden counterparts. Favorites include eggless French Toast, Non dairy sour cream, tofu loaf (different from any 'meatloaf' tofu recipe you've tried), Drop biscuits, vanilla cake/muffins, and cheezecake.

Memories of a Cuban Kitchen: More Than 200 Classic Recipes Review

Memories of a Cuban Kitchen: More Than 200 Classic Recipes

My father is Cuban and I grew up learning to love Yuca con Mojo and Guayaba. There is this thing about Cubans and food, and it is remarkable how people that left the country 45 years ago still talk and eat the cubano way. As a professional Chef, I have used this book to develop new dishes and flavors in my kitchen. Yes I have a Cuban grandmother and lots of aunts that gave me great recipes, but this book is a very complete collection of the most traditional recipes, and of all the cuban cookbooks I have looked at, I would say this is the best.
From the famous Ajiaco Criollo, to the delicious sandwiches (Pan con Lechón, Medianoche, Elena Ruz), to the delicious Pastel de Pollo (Chicken Pot Pie) that I absolutely love and have prepared many many times, the Arroz Congri (Cuban Red Beans and Rice), to all the Flans and Puddings and my father's favorite Guava Tart (Pastel de Guayaba). You will never get tired of this book. Every single recipe we have tried in our family, according to my father, closely resembles his own mother's home cooking. I absolutely love it and would definately recommend it.

I am so tired of fat free everything these days in the grocery store, so it was a real pleasure to read about fat...glorious fat. Maybe my cholesterol is getting jacked to Jesus, but my food has flavor now that I am cooking with fat. I tried McLagan's roasted chicken recipe and it was the best chicken ever...flavorful, juicy...I swoon at the memory. I look forward to trying more of the recipes from the book as soon as I can locate sources for well marbled meats, fatty fowl, and pork bellies. My in-laws are in their eighties and have cooked with lard all their lives. They are happy, healthy, thin, and the food just tastes good. I may croak a few weeks earlier than expected, but I will go out with happy taste buds. I really enjoyed reading about fat.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to High-Fiber Cooking Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to High-Fiber Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All I ever want in a cookbook is fast and easy recipes with ingredients that I do NOT have to hunt for all over hell and creation. I LOVE unique and interesting foods, but sometimes you just want a book of simple recipes that you can whip together. And by whip I mean reach into your fridge and cabinets, find what you need and cook it, all under 20 minutes. Most of the recipes in this book fit that bill. The ones that don't, they just take longer than 30 minutes, but still have great ingredients.
I grabbed this book at a bookstore because I was having an impatient day and it had the most appealing recipes that did not read like a "Best of Emeril Lagasse" cookbook. (And I do love me some Emeril recipes!) What I saw looked like ingredients I can get at my local, rural grocery store. I don't want to have to make a 90 minute trip into the city for ingredients that need to be used within 4 days or they spoil. That's a special weekend menu idea, not an everyday thing.
With all of that said, this book is lovely. It's broken down into parts like an Intro, breakfast and brunch, snacks and beverages, lunch, dinner, sides, and desserts. Those sections are further broken down into chapters. For example, in Breakfast and Brunch, you've got Hot and Cold Cereals, Muffins/Scones and Griddle Cakes, and Eggs/Omelets and Frittatas. Snacks and Beverages has Dips and Spreads, Appetizers, Nibbles and Trail Mixes, and Smoothies and Shakes.
Further, I am a BIG fan of natural ingredients. No fake sugar, no margarine. I want real butter, real sugar....all in moderation. Several other cookbooks that appealed to my other requirements failed in the no-fake-food department. I REFUSE to use Splenda in my cooking. So, if you're not shy about real food, you'll be all set here. As far as calorie count goes...it ranges from around 100/150 up to 700 or so for the dinner recipes. Its mixed well, so you can skip the really high ones and still be getting your money's worth.
The soups sound yummy, I can't wait to try them.
I think this book is a great investment. I have no regrets paying a little more in a bookstore for it. I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

The Whole Foods Market Cookbook: A Guide to Natural Foods with 350 Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a regular shopper at Whole Foods Market for years and I've been waiting for the company to put out a cookbook with some of their own great recipes, like Ed's Tantalizing Tofu, for the home cook. So when this book finally appeared, I was one of the first in line for it. Unfortunately, it's not what I'd hoped for.
I have no complaints about the ingredients list, that's why I shop at WFM -- beautiful fresh, organic produce, all varieties of grain and pasta products, and a wide assortment of gourmet and International foods not found in other stores. For many of my favorite cookbooks [like Nina Simonds' Asian Noodles] Whole Foods Market provides one-stop shopping.
The problem I have with the book is that of the half-dozen or so recipes I tried, I had to make repairs midway through the making, or the flavors or ingredients didn't come together as I expected, or the end product just plain didn't taste good. I was left with beautiful food made into lousy meals.
If you're looking for great-tasting recipes tailor-made for WFM shoppers, I'm afraid you'll have to wait a little while longer. This one should be sent back to the test kitchen.

I happened upon this book and thought I'd give it a shot. That was a year ago and I still use it a few times a week. The food is normal and delicious! My boyfriend loved almost everything I made from this book because it's stuff you would normally make. There are a few new things you will probably want to try, but also, if you have a favorite meal such as chicken cacciatore, beef stroganoff, or cheesecake this book has the recipe and shows you how to make it healthful and still delicious. I use the weight watchers points system and had no trouble converting recipes. It also gives exchange, fat and calorie values for dieters who use a different program. I highly recommend it! It's worth it!

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been cooking with Aviva's first Scramble cookbook for two years now and my whole family has enjoyed her recipes.
When I saw she had a new cookbook out, I requested it immediately but was a bit unsure whether it would live up to the first one. I should not have worried - I think this one is even better! There were so many recipes I loved that I have too many pages to dog-ear, and I anticipate this being used weekly in our home for a long time.
Best improvements:
1. Better organization - While still categorized by seasons (which I find extremely helpful), now the fish/meat/pasta recipes are put together so that you can easily select from the right style of meal. At the beginning of each 'season' every recipe is indexed by page number so you can easily flip right to it.
2. Side dish recipes are now included in each recipe, instead of having to flip to the back of the book
3. Very helpful side-bar articles and tips (and very up to date - including the issue of BPA in canned goods, composting tips, and lunch/snack ideas)
4. Really good recipes! There is great variety in here with a focus on lots of fruits/vegetables and interesting spices. Nothing bland or boring.
I highly recommend this cookbook!!!

Dinner with kids shouldn't be a battleground. And it shouldn't make a martyr out of the parent whose job it is to get it on the table fast, fresh and hot every day at 6 PM. Her users and readers rely on her grocery lists, weekly meal plans and recipes not just for the healthy dinners themselves but for taking the stress out of dinnertime. She wants families to actually enjoy their dinners together! Now, with SOS! The Six O'ClockScramble to the Rescue, Goldfarb is taking an extra of-the-moment stress away from meal planning for busy families: concern about the environment, about the cost of shipping out-of-season food halfway around the world, about packaging, about additives and preservatives. In SOS! The Six O'ClockScramble to the Rescue, readers will get a full year of weekly meals that:--help readers eat seasonally without missing their favorite foods--move toward a slightly more vegetarian menu for health and a lighter environmental footprint--reveal when organic matters (and when it doesn't)--save money through easy, efficient planning, bulk buying, freezing and storing, and avoiding waste--pack the power of achievable ethnic meals, such as Easy Cheesy Tex Mex Scramble and Greek Pasta Salad--make grocery trips count

Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen Review

Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is, hands down, my favorite cookbook. There are over 90 pages of extensive notes on food preparation before you even get to the first recipe. If you are like me and have never prepared Japanese food before, these notes are essential. You learn about the basic ingredients (there are hundereds of different misos), basic cooking techniques (how to drain and press miso), and how to make a variety of basic cooking stocks. Each section is filled with beautiful photographs so you will be able to identify exactly what you are looking for when you get to the Japanese market. One of the previous reviewers was confused because they couldn't tell which miso to use in a recipe. The answer: whichever one you like. That is one of the best aspects of this cookbook. This isn't gourmet cooking, this is is Washoku (home cooking) designed to be cooked to your families taste. As an unexpected bonus the author will often point out regional differences in preparing dishes and give the reader the option of which approach they would like to follow. A great book for anyone that wants to learn basic Japanese cooking. Buyer beware: make sure you have access to an Asian grocery store. The typical American grocer carries very few of the necessary ingredients.

Louisiana's Best Restaurant Recipes Review

Louisiana's Best Restaurant Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love cookbooks like this, where the reader gets a sampler of different recipes from different restaurants. Alton Brown's Asphalt book is fun; so, too, are Guy Fieri's books on delis, diners, and dives. Here, the focus is on Louisiana restaurants and some typical recipes from each. The book is ordered by geographic area: New Orleans Metro, North Shore, Plantation Country, Cajun Country, Crossroads, and Sportsman's Paradise.
It's fun just to skim this book and explore different recipes. For instance, New Orleans Metro. There has to be a recipe from K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen. What about Chicken and Andouille Smoked Sausage Gumbo? Ingredients: chicken, Paul Proudhomme's Meat Magic, onions, green bell papers, celery, flour, vegetable oil, chicken stock, andouille sausage, minced garlic, and hot cooked rice. And, of course, Emeril Lagasse's restaurants have some featured recipes--such as Cedar Plank Fish with Citrus Horseradish Crust (NOLA), Veal Marcelle (Delmonico), and Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Drizzles and Chocolate Sauce (Emeril's). Pork tenderloin dishes are sometimes tricky, given the nature of the meat. But there is what appears to be a neat recipe from Ralph Brennan's BACCO, Rosemary and Garlic Marinated Pork Tenderloin.
Recipes from other regions? One of my colleagues cooks up classic food for a Mardi gras party. This is where I came to enjoy Alligator and crawfish. A North Shore restaurant, Trey Yuen, has one recipe for each: Szechuan Spicy Alligator, Crawfish with Spicy Lobster Sauce.
From Plantation Country, Primo's and its Veal Primo. There is a lot going on here! The veal itself (cooked in butter, with crabmeat, lemon juice, pepper, and Gruyere cheese. Then a sauce featuring peppercorns, brandy, and pate de fois gras. Two other sauces--Meuniere sauce and Hollandaise sauce. I'm never likely to prepare and eat this (too rich!) but, boy, does it look delicious as I read the recipe! Then, from Cajun Country, Crawfish Casserole from the Harbor Seafood Restaurant. Finally, from Sportsman's Paradise (northern Louisiana--I actually learned some geography from this book). The example here, The Brandy House Restaurant's dish, Bayou stir-fry.
Anyhow, this book is a lot of fun--for its recipes, for learning a bit about some apparently excellent restaurants, and a little bit about Louisiana.

The Healthy College Cookbook Review

The Healthy College Cookbook

Putting in 90-100 hour weeks during Graduate school, I needed a basic but comprehensive cookbook where the meals wouldn't take long, the ingredient list wasn't huge, but the meals would still be flavorful. I picked up this little gem. I can't even count how many times I've cooked my favorite recipes out of this book--Vegetarian Lasagna, Balsamic Chicken & Potatoes, the list goes on and on. This cookbook covers every meal item possible and gives you a great combination of classic and unique recipes that anyone can make. You don't have to be a BAD cook to get this book, the authors are sensitive to the fast-paced lifestyle many people have and present this as an alternative to lengthy cooking. And now that I'm out of the Graduate School schedule, guess what -- I'm still making these recipes.

For nearly a decade, The Healthy College Cookbook has offered time-pressed, budget-crunched students a simple way to enjoy home cooking in their own small apartment kitchens or even dorm rooms. Written by students for students, the book offers hundreds of simple, healthful alternatives to dreary cafeteria fare. The first edition was so successful it returned to print 17 times. Now, this best-selling cookbook has been revised, expanded, and enlivened for a new generation of students. One hundred brand-new recipes have been added to the old favorites, including expanded breakfast options, recipes for the ever-popular George Foreman Grill, new smoothie creations, and pizza toppings for storebought crusts, English muffins, and pita bases. Recipes require only a handful of easy-to-find ingredients. The book is packed with vegetarian options, and every recipe is as nutritious as it is delicious. Most can be prepared in less time than it takes to order pizza. Most college students are new to cooking, and The Healthy College Cookbook contains a wealth of information and tips for the novice. It explains cooking terms, describes common spices, and offers basic, sensible advice on stocking a kitchen with equipment and food staples. The book isn't just for novices, however. Even the most discerning young palates will appreciate zesty Garlic Green Beans with Tofu or lively Mandarin-Mint Salad. These recipes are so quick, so inexpensive, and so delicious that they're bound to become dinner party favorites, years past graduation.
