Cooking Outside the Pizza Box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student Review

Cooking Outside the Pizza Box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally bought this book for myself, and found it to be too introductory for me, so I gave it to my brother, who despite being older than me still calls me to ask things like how you mash a potato. The recipes are very easy to read, making no assumptions about previous knowledge, and they utilize store-bought pre-prepared ingredients (the author is especially fond of frozen potsticker dumplings) in a way that is helpful to college students, although I thought occasionally the scratch alternative would have been no more difficult and probably cheaper and better tasting.
What I love best about the book is the way it is organized. Recipes that require no cooking or are microwave-only are marked with big icons on the page, and while the recipes are organized by meal or food type, like most books, the book also contains multiple tables of contents that group the recipes differently--vegetarian, microwavable, appropriate for a date, seasonally, etc.--and even has one set of listings that put together recipes for a complete meal. While not particularly elaborate (as most of the recipes are pretty simple anyway) I love this feature, because matching flavors can be particularly difficult for a new cook, and for any cook a recipe book can be unhelpful in planning a meal if you don't kind of already know what you want.
The first section of the book is also really good for first-timers because it goes over the basics of setting up, cleaning, and sharing a kitchen. It provides lists of basic equipment and the basic ingredients you should always have on hand, and this list is in general pretty sensitive to the limitations of dorm sizes and mini-fridges. It even gives cleaning instructions for some of the less obvious cleaning challenges in the kitchen. I thought the list of things to discuss and agree on with roommates regarding kitchen use was particularly helpful. Lastly, the book itself is well-designed, being spiral-bound rather than a traditional paperback, so that it lays flat easily while staying open to the same page hands-free. This seems like a silly note, but I have a lot of cookbooks, some with a similar target market as this one, and I've had to waste a lot of time copying recipes down onto other paper or recipe cards just because I needed both hands and the book kept closing itself or flipping to another page.
In summary, a great book for someone who doesn't know anything about cooking. Would make a great high school graduation gift perhaps made more interesting by pairing it with some of the basic kitchen tool necessities listed in the first few chapters of the book.

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time Review

The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time
Average Reviews:

These recipes are quick, easy, good, and best of all, a little more adventurous than your normal "family" cookbooks filled with chicken nuggets and pasta. I am not one to plan a week's meals ahead, and I love that I can open this book and find something great to make out of what I have on hand. I've made at least 15 of the recipes and every one was great. The prep time estimates seem to be pretty accurate. Our family in general likes things a little more spicy than most, so some recipes were a little bland but I just add a little more seasoning if that happens. I think they would probably be fine for most people, especially kids.
I think the authors are right on the mark with their advice on kids trying new foods, no "yuck!"s etc. Their philosophy is similar to our own house rules, and as a result my boys (3 and 7) are great eaters. I had the pleasure of meeting the authors at a bookstore signing, and I was very impressed with their knowledge, sensibility, and friendliness!

Tofu 1-2-3 Review

I've been a vegetarian most of life, but have unsuccessfully found a good, simple tofu cookbook - until now. I've made numerous recipes from this book and every recipe is easy, quick and delicious. It is gourmet without the elusive ingredients. If you like to cook, you'll most likely have all of the ingredients in your pantry. The first recipe I made was the tofu chocolate mousse (go light on the almond extract) for my semi-vegetarian husband. He couldn't even tell it was tofu. I HIGHLY recommend this cookbook.

This is another of Linda's wonderful cookbooks. She hits the mark with saving time, something that all of us need to do in our hectic world, yet still creating delicious recipes.
I have followed Linda's website, [...], for years. It's great to have a lot of her recipes in a printed form (please, About, publish another one!!).
Some highlights of this book in a nutshell: Every margin has incredibly useful tips and information that are related to the adjacent recipe. She includes some pertinent questions (perhaps from her web readers?) and answers as well. My favorite recipes include the Gourmet Grilled Cheese, Norwegian Toast (like biscotti - heaven with coffee in the morning!), Carmelized Onion Dip (started in the slow cooker), Freezer Waffles (the kids love 'em--I even sneak in a little wheat germ), and the Grilled Seafood pizza which is a hit with my Bunco friends. All of them are very quick and Linda knows just where to cut corners on time, never sacrificing flavor. I can't wait to try more of these recipes. Meanwhile, I will stayed tuned to her website!!
Don't miss the back of the book with Linda's recommendations for her favorite websites and cookbooks.

I have cooked just about every recipe in this book at least twice and it was all very easy and absolutely delicious. My friends ask for several of the dishes over and over, including the Lentil Soup with Spicy Greens (the best lentil soup I have ever had), and the Penne with Broccoli, Red Pepper and Garlic.
This book alone has given me the reputation of being an excellent cook, but I'll never tell it was the book and not me! I highly recommend this one to anyone who wants to eat very, very well and boost their reputation as a cook. I would buy copies for everyone I know except I don't want to share my culinary secrets....Thank you Maria Robbins.

Delia's Winter Collection: 150 Recipes for Winter Review

Delia's Winter Collection: 150 Recipes for Winter

I own most of Delia Smith's cookbooks, gathered on several trips to the UK over the years. They are fantastic. This one in particular deals with winter comfort/warming food - a personal favorite - covering the whole range of recipes, vegetarian and non vegetarian. In addition to starters and main courses, steamed puddings are covered in this book. In the USA they are neglected, but I think that nothing is more wonderful on a cold winter day than a hot pudding to finish a meal - one that has been steaming for hours on the back of the stove. If only more US cookbooks could take as much care presenting complete, consise, and dependable recipes...I find that most US cookbooks just aren't well written and aren't worth the money. All Delia Smith books are well worth owning

Over 10 years ago Joyce Campagna started the popular Cooking Contest Newsletter. Now, at the urging of her readers, she and her husband Don have written a cookbook. The Cooking Contest Cookbook is a collection of prize-winning recipes, original recipes using readily available ingredients. It is a handy source of new things to try, plus different approaches to old favorites. The part I like best is the desserts. GREAT CHOCOLATE RECIPES! YUM! If you have considered entering cooking contests but you don't know where to start, this cookbook will give you a look of what kind of things win. For people who read cookbooks like other people read novels, this is the perfect gift, but it is also a wonderful present for anyone who likes to cook, or wants to learn.

As a 1st generation Filipino-American, I grew up loving Filipino comfort food but never knew how to make it myself. This was the first cookbook of Filipino recipes that I was able to follow clearly - with other books, I was constantly calling family members to define terms and ingredients. Also, it contains all the recipes I grew up begging my mother to make for me. But the best part was that I could find 99% of the ingredients in my local supermarket!

I'm not a great cook, and that's why I love my slow cooker. It doesn't require a great chef to make edible food. But, the only recipes for my slow cooker that I could find involved pouring Campbells Cream Soup over meat, and I was getting sick of it. This cookbook offers a wide variety of simple recipes, and so far they are delicious. I think I'll be ordering the Hildebrand's other cookbooks too!

The Best Simple Recipes Review

The Best Simple Recipes

As a "seasoned" cook, I've been down most of the cooking routes: from the French classics, to one-hour gourmet, to complex vegetarian, to severe, healthy cooking by the docs. Now, I lean to this cookbook's style: simple, tasty, fresh and light -- somewhere between poached quenelles and fried tofu. This is a good grouping of contemporary recipes with zip, often with international flair (oriental, Mexican, etc.). Some recipes are updated twists on old faves like Tuna Melt but with artichokes; BLT salad using mayo-smeared croutons; vegetarian chili with corn; Southwestern salmon cakes. Others take classics but ditch the complex and daunting preparation-- like switching paper-thin potato slices for a potato chip mix or skipping the fish-steaming by laying salmon atop the asparagus, or using rotisserie chicken for a flavorful- but quick-chicken soup. Some clever ideas that work! The book has some surprising ingredient combos like kielbasa with potato leek soup. I appreciate the explanatory notes on the thoughtful but concise hows and whys of the recipes, and am impressed with the recommendations of brand name grocery items that they have tested. It's instructive without being pedantic or fussy. For those of us who like to see the cook in action, there are selected photos of some of the techniques and I picked up a few new ones. This is the kind of cookbook you can actually USE everyday, without resorting to the dumbed-down or goofy ones, or those with exotic hard-to-find ingredients or lengthy preparation. It reflects how we cook these days, and I plan to use it often.

Most quick-recipe collections promise a lot but deliver very little. Bland, uninspired dishes may be fast, but will you make them again? And clever gimmicks sound great, but in reality, they rarely make sense. The team at America's Test Kitchen has created more than 200 easy-to-make 30-minute recipes that guarantee impressive results with a minimum of effort. With our test kitchen know-how (and relentless testing) we found ways to make naturally fast dishes faster, and traditionally slow-cooked dinners a weeknight option. But one thing we never did was settle on shortcuts that shortchanged flavor. Some compromises simply aren't worth making. No matter the path taken, every recipe in this book is foolproof, full-flavores and fast. And they come with our promise to you: Recipes that work. Every time.

Make-A-Mix Review

Make-A-Mix
Average Reviews:

My husband has allergies to just about every preservative, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and any other food additive on the market. All the stuff you really shouldn't eat anyway. I cook from scratch mostly, and this book has been a wonderful addition to my kitchen.
Last night I made the chocolate syrup; almost all the chocolate syrups on the market have artificial flavorings. My family loves the chocolate pudding from scratch (just three ingredients -- did you ever look at a pudding mix box?), and my kids are so used to tasting my home-cooked meals that they think the processed meals are gross.
The money we save is great, but the time I save in the kitchen is even better. I highly recommend this book.

Make-A-Mix is really two cookbooks in one. The cookbook begins with 67 make-ahead shortcut mixes for everything from all-purpose cake mix to meatball mix. These can be made on a weekend-or whenever there's free time-and used to speed food preparation on busy days. The mixes are a key ingredient in one or more of the 306 recipes that follow. The kitchen-tested recipes run the gamut from breakfast dishes to after-dinner treats. They include hearty dinner entrees, like enchilada casserole, onion pot roast, and shrimp & vegetable stir-fry; international fare like green chili burritos and quick chow mein; soups and other appetizers, like New England clam chowder, and even freezer treats like fruit slush. With the Make-A-Mix method, home cooks can control the amount of sugar, salt, and preservatives in a recipe, and save money on store-bought mixes. This cookbook is the updated and expanded version of Make-A-Mix that sold over a million copies.

Miserly Meals: Healthy, Tasty Recipes Under 75¢ per Serving Review

Miserly Meals: Healthy, Tasty Recipes Under 75ยข per Serving
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a fan of Jonni McCoy's other two books - "Frugal Families" and "Miserly Moms", so I purchased her book "Miserly Meals". I have to say that we have tried a week's worth of meals (including lunches) and we are sorely disappointed. These may be inexpensive and healthy, but they are not all that tasty. Some don't even work right. Last night, I made Mock Pizza in the slow cooker and it called for uncooked egg noodles. There apparently wasn't enough liquid in the recipe because the bottom noodles were cooked, but the top ones were still crunchy. I kept adding liquid, but then it was plain old mush. Yuck. Several other recipes are bland and boring.
I did like the meatball recipe, however, and even tripled it for my freezer. Some of the other basic recipes were also good, such as the taco sauce and spaghetti sauce. But we were very disappointed in many of the meals.
One other concern I had was that the yield of the recipes were not consistent. Some served four, some six, some eight. I would have appreciated a little more consistency there. We have a family of six, though, and even recipes that said they served six weren't enough for us.
I did like the kitchen tips and the nutritional breakdown of each meal. I wish the index was a little more comprehensive so that I could find a recipe when I wanted to use tomatoes, for example.
Overall, we were simply disappointed.

The 3-Day Cleanse: Drink Fresh Juice, Eat Real Food, and Get Back into Your Skinny Jeans Review

The 3-Day Cleanse: Drink Fresh Juice, Eat Real Food, and Get Back into Your Skinny Jeans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't give this book 5 stars because there are no alternative recipes to the nut milks for people like me who are allergic to cashews. I also think they should have gone more in depth with the side effects you will experience while detoxifying. I got a weird rash all over my arms from the toxins coming to the surface reacting with the sun. My doctor prescribed Betamethasone cream which worked, and I realized when I exercised my arms also felt better because the sweat was helping remove the toxins from my skin. I am Kenyan-American so I don't wear sun screen regularly but I've learned my lesson after that incident (lol) and now wear SPF 100 when it's very sunny outside. You might also want to take a sea salt bath while detoxing as I did to help draw out the toxins the juices dredge up, it really helped.
I originally wanted to do the actual 3-day Blue Print Cleanse which delivers the juices daily to your house but it would have cost $250, which seems too pricey for me, so I figured I could just buy the book and a juicer and do the cleanse myself. I bought a Factory-Reconditioned Breville XXJE95XL Two Speed Juice Fountain Plus (which I love)from Best Buy for $75 and began reading the book and experimenting with the juice recipes.
I think this book is great. I discovered juice cleanses through my best friend who had success with both of her cleanses, but this book gave me a lot more information. For instance, drinking water with lemon in the morning and then having a green juice is best to help clean out your system from the night before.
I've been drinking juices every other day as a replacement for breakfast and lunch for over a month and I have noticed a remarkable difference. I no longer crave a lot of junk food and when I did give in and have a chicken nuggets meal from McDonalds, the food tasted so gross to me. I've also noticed the flavored sodas I used to love (orange, grape, etc.) now have a chemically taste and I can only drink Pepsi and ginger soda. My tolerance for refined sugar has also decreased. When I decided to treat myself to a slushy I got the first sugar rush headache I've ever had in my life. I don't crave sweets anymore, and when I get a little craving for chocolate I only need one piece to be satisfied instead of the whole bar.
And I can fit into skinny jeans again!

Recipe Hall of Fame Quick & Easy Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Quail Ridge Press Cookbook Series.) Review

Recipe Hall of Fame Quick and Easy Cookbook: Winning Recipes from Hometown America (Quail Ridge Press Cookbook Series.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had purchased this a few weeks ago.
I work a lot of hours and I have a 2hour daily commute.
I decided I was tired of blah foods and wanted to do something about it.
So, I purchased some new cookbooks.
This one is one that I have been using the most.
I made a Chili Soup, Easy Brown Rice, Beef Stew, a Baked Rice dish.
At tops my prep time was around 10 minutes.
There is a lot to recommend in this book.
The recipes are easy and the ingredients are things that you would likely have in your cabinets or refrigerator.
They list where each recipe is from.
(As far as the state they got the recipe from)
The editor sometimes list additional things for the recipe.
Like in one recipe where it said Tomato Juice.
They added at the bottom that V8 was just as good.
Easy to read.
Sometimes you had 2-3 recipes on one page.
In the back of this book they list every cookbook they researched and got recipes from.
I have in addition to this their Best of Best Florida Cookbook.
They also have in the very back of the book before the index a couple of selections.
One is Equivalent.
Like 1 pound of flour would be 4 1/2 cups.
Then they have another area for measurements.
They also have Substitutions.
Lke 1 sliced cook bacon=1 tablespoon of bacon bits.
They give you Oven-to-Crockpot Cooking Time Conversions.
Pan sizes for baking.
Very good information and has made cooking much more enjoyable for me.
So far my partner has said only one thing about something I cooked and it was because *I* made cooked something too long and it was dryer than it should had been.

Real Simple Best Recipes: Easy, Delicious Meals Review

Real Simple Best Recipes: Easy, Delicious Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an amazing book for several reasons. Yes the recipes are simple but elegant, but even better are the recipe keys. If you have a younger budding, adventurous chef in your family, someone you would like to encourage with more than the usual focus of cookies and cakes for the younger cook, this is perfect. There are many recipes keyed in as kid friendly. The other keys that recipes are labeled with are: 30 minutes or less, heart-healthy, one pot, vegetarian, no-cook, and freezable. Also in the back of the book before the index is nutritional information including calories which I have wondered why that information is missing from so many new cookbooks
Most recipes are one to a page with pictures which again helps that younger or not so young cook. There are at a glance guides for chicken, beef, pork lamb, pasta; which again is ideal to help any cook. Menu suggestions are included as well as baking pan substitutions, something I often need.
The included recipes are appetizers, soups, dinner salads, poultry, beef, pork, lamb, pasta, seafood, vegetarian mains, side dishes, and desserts.
This is just perfect for someone starting out or a more advanced cook who wants a simplified but not too demanding cookbook.
