The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes Review

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes
Average Reviews:

I am very pleased with this book: it is simple, the recipes can easily be modified, and best of all: there are shopping lists. I find that a large part of my meal executing woes are caused by not having time to plan and make lists. The foods are very middle of the road: not too gourmet, not too many processed foods. A couple meals a week are vegetarian, but carb watchers can add a fish fillet or chicken or something to the meal easily. Lots of veggies are included too. After purchasing a similar book that ended up suggesting I make "duck tacos" this book is a winner. Tip: take it to an office supply store and have the cover laminated and have it spiral-bound for easy use.

The Blue Heron Ranch Cookbook, based on Cooking Off the Grid, also by Nadia Natali, blends 126 tasty, healthful recipes with lively tales of the Natali family's adventures living close to the land—in the wilds of California's Los Padres National Forest. Nadia Natali's varied dishes, suitable for any group or family, are presented in a simple style that makes them both visually appealing and effortless, as a sequence of ingredients that correspond to numbered directions. Each chapter opens with a vivid account of the family's trials and triumphs at Blue Heron Ranch, followed by a particular category of recipes, arranged in seven groupings. Whimsical illustrations adorn the recipes and embellish the sometimes poignant, often hilarious stories about raising a family in the wilderness, running a meditation center, and facing nature's seemingly endless challenges—with the Blue Heron Ranch kitchen being the center around which these events unfold. Recipes include Blue Heron Ranch Potato Leek Soup, Saturday Market Quiche, Miso Pine Salmon, Ojai Bouillabaisse, Early Morning Rice Cream, Aunt Ev's Cardamom Bundt Cake, and Honey Almond Chai. The Blue Heron Ranch Cookbook offers culinary and spiritual sustenance to anyone who wants to experience, or revisit, the pleasures of comforting, communal meals at Zen and other retreat centers.

Bravo! I tried 3 recipes at different times: Couscous with Dried Cranberries and Toasted Almonds, Tomato Salad with Toasted Bread and Feta Cheese, and Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. This book actually tempted me to go into the kitchen and try them. Not a place I generally like to be but it was quick and better still it not only worked but I receive received raves from my grandchildren. I am now going to work my way through the fish chapter for my husband and myself.
Thank you Ronnie Fein

The Working Mother COOKBOOK: Fast, Easy Recipes from the Editors of Working Mother magazine Review

The Working Mother COOKBOOK: Fast, Easy Recipes from the Editors of Working Mother magazine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Back in the old days when I was young and childless, I spent my Wednesday evenings cooking from Pierre Franey's weekly "60-Minute Gourmet" column in the NYTimes. I considered the enterprise a loving weekly gift to my new husband, but 60 minutes? No way. More like 2 and a half hours. Since then I budget at least twice the time for cooking that 'time-saving' recipes claim, and often I'll still be scrambling. This book really makes good on its promise: of 8 weekday meals I've prepared so far, none took me longer than 30 minutes. Better yet, the food is really delicious. Many of these recipes do honorable double-duty in the "terrific-for-guests" file as well as the one for "when-I-get-home-after-8PM". There are recipes for 29-minute meals and recipes for freeze-ahead one-pot meals, but the section that's changed my life, that has made me so much happier about cooking for my family while I work 55 hours per week that I am writing this review like some kind of Born-Again Home Ec major, are the 8 weeks' worth of weekly meal plans. You get a shopping list for the week (bliss! a shopping list that really is so efficient for the week that 1 trip does the job without wasting food) and recipes with logically laid out preparation plans for complete dinners for the week. The trick is you cook like a demon on the weekend to prepare the foundations (meats, sauces, soup bases etc) for the weekday meals...but the results, during the week, are quick, delicious, and interesting. This is a deceptively slim volume which is actually a goldmine. Bravo, Susan Ott.

Falling Cloudberries: A World of Family Recipes Review

Falling Cloudberries: A World of Family Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who owns close to two hundred cookbooks (passion or sickness, your choice on what to call it) I've vowed not to purchase another one for the rest of my cooking days. When I first glimpsed "Falling Cloudberries" at a bookstore I had to will myself to walk away. Never again, I said.
Never say never.
First, a bit of background. Like most foodies and cooks, Tessa Kiros grew up scented by cooking smells and surrounded by people who're passionate about food. Her book is filled with recipes that represent her heritage: Greek, Finnish, Cypriot, South African, and Italian. As such, there are dishes here that challenge the American palate, especially those of pedestrian tastes, but what a delightful and tasty challenge it is.
I'll set aside the sheer beauty of this book for now and rate it on the essentials--the approachability and accuracy of its recipes, the reliance on fresh and obtainable ingredients, a balanced mix of easy, intermediate and advanced cooking methods, logical and sensible organization, practical tips to ensure success, satisfaction with the end product, and (always a consideration for me) a generous representation of everyday fare.
I've tried about a dozen from this thick book and it's, without doubt, a 5-star cookbook just basing it on the above:
(1)Finnish - Gravadlax with Dill Cucumbers; Potato Pancakes (of course, to go w/ the gravadlax); Fresh Salmon, Dill & Potato Soup; Finnish Meatballs; Stroganoff with Pickled Cucumbers and will later try the Cinnamon and Cardamom Buns
(2)Greek - Dolmades; Tzatziki; Chickpea, Feta & Coriander Salad; Calamari with Butter, Lemon & Garlic; Prawns with Peri-Peri; Lemon & Oregano Chicken; Stuffed Vegetables and will later attempt the Baklava
(3)Cypriot - Moussaka (if you can make lasagna, you can make this without batting an eyelash); Pork in Red Wine
(4)South African - Fried Chicken and Barbecue Ribs, if you can believe it!
That's it...that's as far as I got and tons to go. Everything I tried was simply delicious and none of them required tremendous labor, just the same amount of effort I put into everyday cooking. For those that are fussier, I plan to just make them in the weekends when I have more time.
The book is drop-dead gorgeous and I mean every part of it. From the spine to the flyleaf, to all the photos to the quality of bond, and it even came with a pretty ribbon bookmark (how thoughtful). It's peppered with tidbits on Tessa's family and her growing up cooking with them. There's even a penciled drawing of her family tree that I thought added an amusing and extra special touch to this very personal account of food and cooking over several generations. Really creatively executed and one can easily tell that it was a labor of love. It's too beautiful that I don't cook with this book lying as is on my counter. I photocopy the page I need or wrap it first in clear plastic before using. Even these precautions don't seem enough. Someday, when I can no longer grasp my chef's knife or intimidate a slab of pastry into submission with a whack or two, I want to look at this book and just lose myself in its pristine beauty. Ridiculous, I know, but there are cooks out there who know precisely what I mean--they're the same people who look longingly at gorgeous cookbooks and say `never again' without much conviction!

Make-A-Mix Review

Make-A-Mix
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband has allergies to just about every preservative, artificial flavoring, artificial coloring, and any other food additive on the market. All the stuff you really shouldn't eat anyway. I cook from scratch mostly, and this book has been a wonderful addition to my kitchen.
Last night I made the chocolate syrup; almost all the chocolate syrups on the market have artificial flavorings. My family loves the chocolate pudding from scratch (just three ingredients -- did you ever look at a pudding mix box?), and my kids are so used to tasting my home-cooked meals that they think the processed meals are gross.
The money we save is great, but the time I save in the kitchen is even better. I highly recommend this book.

Make-A-Mix is really two cookbooks in one. The cookbook begins with 67 make-ahead shortcut mixes for everything from all-purpose cake mix to meatball mix. These can be made on a weekend-or whenever there's free time-and used to speed food preparation on busy days. The mixes are a key ingredient in one or more of the 306 recipes that follow. The kitchen-tested recipes run the gamut from breakfast dishes to after-dinner treats. They include hearty dinner entrees, like enchilada casserole, onion pot roast, and shrimp & vegetable stir-fry; international fare like green chili burritos and quick chow mein; soups and other appetizers, like New England clam chowder, and even freezer treats like fruit slush. With the Make-A-Mix method, home cooks can control the amount of sugar, salt, and preservatives in a recipe, and save money on store-bought mixes. This cookbook is the updated and expanded version of Make-A-Mix that sold over a million copies.

One Bite Won't Kill You: More than 200 Recipes to Tempt Even the Pickiest Kids on Earth Review

One Bite Won't Kill You: More than 200 Recipes to Tempt Even the Pickiest Kids on Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am responsible for feeding four males daily (one of whom is my husband), all of whom are such picky eaters that I come close to pounding my head with the cast-iron Le Creuset cookware I bought before I had children. However, these are mighty fine recipes, most of which will get eaten around these parts if I'm not hiding chopped broccoli in them. In addition, Ann reminds us in the nicest possible way that in this world, being a picky eater is sheer luxury, and then rolls up her sleeves and gets to it. As in her previous (and also highly recommended, by me) cookbooks, Beat This! and Beat That!, Ann admits freely that there is a time and a place in the kitchen for time-saving convenience foods, cleverly disguised. And if that argument goes over with me--when I lived in Berkeley, I used to grind my own flour, for God's sake--it should to you, too. The Roz Chast illustrations are a treat. The holidays are coming, so buy this book for anyone who can boil water. I'll be watching.

The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue: 101 All-New Recipes and "Sneaky" Tricks for Creating Healthy Meals Kids Will Love Review

The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue: 101 All-New Recipes and Sneaky Tricks for Creating Healthy Meals Kids Will Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To say that the Sneaky Chef has revolutionized how I feed my family would be an understatement. To say that everyone I know, now knows about her books, is an understatement. To say that my freezer is stocked full with mini glass jars, full of green, purple, orange, and white purees, is an understatement.

I came across the "kid's favorites" book right around the holidays. I was looking for a cookbook to add something new and healthy to my repertoire, and figured I'd find a recipe or two. So often a cookbook has one or two decent recipes, and lots of filler. I was excited to try the recipes, and stunned at how we loved each and every one. Although we are frequent consumers of fruits and vegetables, I never expected to add them to brownies, mac and cheese, or stuffed potatoes! I have "sneaked" the recipes onto my two daughters (1 yr and 4 yrs), my meat-loving husband, my picky dad, and my skeptical mom. I've shared recipes with my friends, and urged everyone I know to try this ingenious new way of cooking. One friend recently thanked me repeatedly, saying, "My kids ate four vegetables tonight. I can't thank you enough for showing me this book!" I'm a psychologist with a specialization in eating disorders, and know how important it is to minimize the dinnertime battles. The concept of beefing up nutritional values, while minimizing conflict, is incredible.
I received "To the Rescue" from Amazon last night, and couldn't help it- I had to try a recipe immediately. We started with the fudge scones, and boy, were they amazing. Reading through the reader blurbs and blog quotes in the book, I'm astounded (yet not surprised) at how many others are inspired by her ways. It's as if this new way of feeding our families is changing more than just how we cook- it's changing how we look at food, how we interact, and how we think. I truly do grocery shop based on what "sneaky" recipes I'm making next. I can't wait to make each and every batch of puree, wondering what I'll use it in next. I even scoop some purees into our everyday foods.
I am fortunate in that my family loves the concept. My four-yr-old daughter loves to say "Daddy, guess which sneaky ingredients are in this dinner?" and everyone takes turns guessing once they've tried it. No one ever guesses correctly the first time, which just goes to show how well they are hidden!I love that this new book has slow-cooker recipes, and uses pumpkin purees. Also, I wanted to share what we do to store purees. I ask my friends who use glass baby food jars to save me their empty jars. They're the perfect size for storing 1/4 cups of puree, freeze well, and you don't end up storing in plastic, which so many of us are getting away from these days due to health reasons. Even Ball makes small glass canning jars that work well (4 oz) but babyfood jars are free and freeze well, so why not!
With the Sneaky Chef by my side, I feel like a Super Hero. Ms. Chapin should sell "Sneaky Chef, Super Mom" capes on her website!

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families Review

SOS The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been cooking with Aviva's first Scramble cookbook for two years now and my whole family has enjoyed her recipes.
When I saw she had a new cookbook out, I requested it immediately but was a bit unsure whether it would live up to the first one. I should not have worried - I think this one is even better! There were so many recipes I loved that I have too many pages to dog-ear, and I anticipate this being used weekly in our home for a long time.
Best improvements:
1. Better organization - While still categorized by seasons (which I find extremely helpful), now the fish/meat/pasta recipes are put together so that you can easily select from the right style of meal. At the beginning of each 'season' every recipe is indexed by page number so you can easily flip right to it.
2. Side dish recipes are now included in each recipe, instead of having to flip to the back of the book
3. Very helpful side-bar articles and tips (and very up to date - including the issue of BPA in canned goods, composting tips, and lunch/snack ideas)
4. Really good recipes! There is great variety in here with a focus on lots of fruits/vegetables and interesting spices. Nothing bland or boring.
I highly recommend this cookbook!!!

I bought this when I returned to work when my daughter was 10 months old. I initially bought it for the downloadable shopping lists, but instead of going by week, I go by seasons, flip through to find 2-3 recipes that jump out at me, and buy the ingredients for those. The next week, I pick up where I left off. The meals have simple ingredients, interesting flavors, and are easy to prepare. 2 minor things: the meals are 30 minutes to prepare, but may take longer to cook, so keep an eye on that. Also, some of the recommended dish sizes are on the small side, so I sometimes size up (9x13 instead of 8x11, for instance) to make sure that it fits well without bubbling over.

The Six O'Clock Scramble cookbook is a companion to Aviva's wonderful email-based newsletter service that provides busy moms with easy and nutritious meals for their families. The Scramble is a weekly e-mail newsletter that features: Five flavorful and healthy, tried-and-true dinner recipes with side dish suggestions, emailed to you each week. Easy-to-prepare dinners in 30 minutes (or less), most with fewer than 10 ingredients. Delicious, easy recipes like Asian Turkey Burgers, Tortellini Tossed with Fresh Mozzarella, honey glazed salmon and red beans and rice burritos. Includes an organized grocery list so you can print and shop. Perfect for working or full-time parents, or anyone who wants to make easy, delicious home-cooked meals. From O, The Oprah magazine:Aviva Goldfarb had one of those ideas - incredibly obvious, yet nobody had thought of it - that immediately make the pieces of your brain fit together with a neat click. A wife, mother, self-published cookbook author, and organizational ace, Goldfarb realized that for most people 6 P.M. was too late to start wondering what to cook for dinner. So she started the Six O'Clock Scramble (thescramble.com), a weekly e-mail newsletter with five days' worth of dinner recipes, plus grocery lists. The meals (grilled teriyaki chicken tenderloins one night, baked huevos rancheros another) take about a half hour to prepare and are creative, healthy, unprocessed and kid-friendly without being adult-alienating. A subscription costs $5 a month - a small price to pay for a whole new kind of happy meal. Goldfarb herself is happy, having graduated from the self-publishing business: Next fall St. Martin's Press will release The Six O'Clock Scramble Cookbook.

I was in the typical - meat, can of soup - maybe some wine, veggies ..mode of crockpot cooking. The food usually came out 'ok', but not rave material.
I was amazed at the variations offered in this book. It's just like cooking a gourmet meal, but p.s. you put it in the crockpot. And trust me - you won't use the recipes just for entertaining - they are too good not to use everyday.
The recipes were so inspiring, I even justified splurging on a new crockpot.
