The Country Cooking of France Review

The Country Cooking of France
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Make no mistake about the title, "Country" implies neither lack of sophistication, nor compromise on quality of recipe. That said, this book provides a broad spectrum of French cuisine, which makes use of everyday ingredients, prepared in a manner which does not require a mastery of culinary skills. Use of French terminology and the French language itself, is done with purpose and not over-emphasized, nor confusing. Every aspect of a French meal, in terms of courses, dishes and ingredient types, (minus wine) are covered. Dedicated chapters for soups, breads, desserts, various vegetables, "innards & extremeties," frogs and snails, and sauces are all presented in the same descriptive narritive and colorful photography. In addition to the beautiful photography and well written instructions on preparation and execution, there is also a glossary of terms, techniques, ingredients and (basic) recipes, and, scattered throughout the various chapters, vignettes on people, places, and ingredients associated with French cuisine.
If one is to find fault with this book, it is on quantity of photographs. Without actually counting, there are about eight to ten recipes for every, actual, photo of a finished dish. This does not diminish the desire to attempt these delicious dishes, rather it does limit those who wish to make a visual connection with a dish, prior to attempting its replication. Otherwise, recipes are cross-referenced, and the index is well organized.
Technically, this book is a beautifully crafted work of graphic artistry. From the lace-cut dust jacket to the the font, to the country pantry motif, this book is executed well and presented exquisitely, which makes it a great addition to a personal library, and a very fine gift item.

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1) Review

The Complete Crockery Cookbook: Create Spectacular Meals with Your Slowcooker (The Complete Crockpot Cookbook, 1)

This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.

After reading the Urban Picnic my boyfriend and I have become picnic maniacs. We picnic in our yard, in the park, on park benches, at the beach or the lake. The recipes are great, the musical selections excellent but more than that The Urban Picnic makes you want to stop and enjoy life. Thanks for the inspiration!

The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue: 101 All-New Recipes and "Sneaky" Tricks for Creating Healthy Meals Kids Will Love Review

The Sneaky Chef to the Rescue: 101 All-New Recipes and Sneaky Tricks for Creating Healthy Meals Kids Will Love
Average Reviews:

To say that the Sneaky Chef has revolutionized how I feed my family would be an understatement. To say that everyone I know, now knows about her books, is an understatement. To say that my freezer is stocked full with mini glass jars, full of green, purple, orange, and white purees, is an understatement.

I came across the "kid's favorites" book right around the holidays. I was looking for a cookbook to add something new and healthy to my repertoire, and figured I'd find a recipe or two. So often a cookbook has one or two decent recipes, and lots of filler. I was excited to try the recipes, and stunned at how we loved each and every one. Although we are frequent consumers of fruits and vegetables, I never expected to add them to brownies, mac and cheese, or stuffed potatoes! I have "sneaked" the recipes onto my two daughters (1 yr and 4 yrs), my meat-loving husband, my picky dad, and my skeptical mom. I've shared recipes with my friends, and urged everyone I know to try this ingenious new way of cooking. One friend recently thanked me repeatedly, saying, "My kids ate four vegetables tonight. I can't thank you enough for showing me this book!" I'm a psychologist with a specialization in eating disorders, and know how important it is to minimize the dinnertime battles. The concept of beefing up nutritional values, while minimizing conflict, is incredible.
I received "To the Rescue" from Amazon last night, and couldn't help it- I had to try a recipe immediately. We started with the fudge scones, and boy, were they amazing. Reading through the reader blurbs and blog quotes in the book, I'm astounded (yet not surprised) at how many others are inspired by her ways. It's as if this new way of feeding our families is changing more than just how we cook- it's changing how we look at food, how we interact, and how we think. I truly do grocery shop based on what "sneaky" recipes I'm making next. I can't wait to make each and every batch of puree, wondering what I'll use it in next. I even scoop some purees into our everyday foods.
I am fortunate in that my family loves the concept. My four-yr-old daughter loves to say "Daddy, guess which sneaky ingredients are in this dinner?" and everyone takes turns guessing once they've tried it. No one ever guesses correctly the first time, which just goes to show how well they are hidden!I love that this new book has slow-cooker recipes, and uses pumpkin purees. Also, I wanted to share what we do to store purees. I ask my friends who use glass baby food jars to save me their empty jars. They're the perfect size for storing 1/4 cups of puree, freeze well, and you don't end up storing in plastic, which so many of us are getting away from these days due to health reasons. Even Ball makes small glass canning jars that work well (4 oz) but babyfood jars are free and freeze well, so why not!
With the Sneaky Chef by my side, I feel like a Super Hero. Ms. Chapin should sell "Sneaky Chef, Super Mom" capes on her website!

Stone Soup Tales: Recipes for Sharing Review

Stone Soup Tales: Recipes for Sharing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Stone Soup Tales is a book filled with recipes for sharing and it has a unique appeal for anyone who loves fables. The book starts with the Swedish fable of Stone Soup retold by Michalle Shown. As "Rabbit" starts to make stone soup, he wishes for carrots and potatoes to add to his soup. Soon, the animals in the forest bring ingredients to make a delicious soup. The story is then followed by a recipe for Stone Soup which includes a stone.
This book was created by "The Children's Cabinet," a nonprofit organization that helps to bring diverse groups "to the table" to address issues facing children and their families. They have developed a number of programs over the years, including Family Counseling, Tutoring, Parenting Education and Adolescent Health Care.
The Chapters:
If You Make a Cookie - an interesting way at looking at baking.
Sharing The Kitchen: Recipes You Can Prepare Together: Green Eggs and Ham, Toad in the Hole (eggs and bread), Cookie Cutter Sandwiches, and Peanut Butter Pizza.
The Crow and The Pitcher of Water
Recipes Your Whole Family Will Love: Favorite Family Recipes
Zigzag Walk
Soups, Salads and Sides
Frog in a Milk-Pail ( a story about never giving up)
Entrees and Main Dishes
The Ant and the Dove
Desserts and Beverages
Each recipe is set out in a very organized fashion which makes this book perfect for young cooks. The title is in bold, followed by a short list of ingredients. Then, the list of instructions looks like this:
Tools........measuring cup, table knife, nonstick baking sheet, potholders, metal spatula, pizza cutter.
Ask.........an adult to preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Spread......the peanut butter over the pizza crust.
Then, the words Arrange, Place, Bake, Transfer, Slice, Makes and Note follow. Each recipe in the first section is similar with just enough detail to make the recipes easy to follow. The Recipes in the Whole Family Section are written without the simpler steps for children, but are equally easy to follow.
Recipes of interest: Snowflake Sleds, No-Bake Cookies, Crispy rice Cereal Treats, Marshmallow Snowmen, Baked Spanish Rice, Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya, Seafood Cheddar Bisque, Oreo Cookie Cheesecake and Tiramisu.
The final "very original recipes" are humorous quotes "from the mouths of babes."
Stone Soup Tales is a unique cookbook, collectors will enjoy and parents will appreciate. The cover has a picture of a rabbit stirring soup and the edges are a beautiful carroty color. Perfect for gifts this Fall.

101 Soups and Stew Recipes for Less Than .75 Cents a Serving (Crazy about Crockpots) Review

101 Soups and Stew Recipes for Less Than .75 Cents a Serving (Crazy about Crockpots)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I went back to work and wanted to use our crockpot more often, but should have looked around some more. While this book didn't seem to have as many recipes that required a lot of preparation - sometimes the prep work negates the benefit of using the darned thing in the first place - it also relies too much on canned products, in my opinion. If all I need to do is open a can, I could just buy some Chunky Soup and skip the whole cooking process.
I was hoping for something a little more healthy and can probably make some of these recipes work with minor adjustments - and it might be great for beginning cooks. It just wasn't worth $10.20 for me and I wish I hadn't spent the money.

Mollie Katzen's Vegetable Heaven: Over 200 Recipes for Uncommon Soups, Tasty Bites, Side Dishes, and Too Many Desserts Review

Mollie Katzen's Vegetable Heaven: Over 200 Recipes for Uncommon Soups, Tasty Bites, Side Dishes, and Too Many Desserts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've never created such flavorful and satisfying dishes from such simple recipes as I have with this book. A good example is the roasted beans with garlic and olives: two or three ingredients to buy at the grocery store, ten minutes of work, two items to wash when you're done, and a rich, tasty dish that I was proud to present to dinner guests.
The introduction, which unfortunately is not included in the preview pages, gives a good idea of what to expect: food "prepared in sumptuous, yet uncomplicated ways.... opulent, yet clean and simple". _Vegetable Heaven_ isn't a vegan cookbook, but most of the recipes are vegan or adaptable. It stands out among such cookbooks for its simple, flavorful, *filling* dishes. The Achille's heel of most vegan cooking is the inability to combine flavor with the heaviness that creates a satisfied feeling after a meal. In recipe after recipe, _Vegetable Heaven_ shows how this difficulty can be overcome. Since the recipes are filling and don't use as many exotic ingredients as some vegetarian cookbooks, they're useful when cooking for unadventurous eaters, such as parents, children, and meat-eaters. Some of the recipes are quite spicy, but a few are bland children's food or comfort food. The descriptions are clear, so you won't be unpleasantly surprised.
Besides being full of great recipes, the book is durable, exceptionally well laid out, and mostly a pleasure to use. However, it doesn't lie open unless you're using a recipe from the middle third of the book.
Of course, _Vegetable Heaven_ doesn't try to be all things to all people. It's not a report of gastronomical research and innovation, so if you're an experienced cook, don't expect to be provoked and stimulated on every page. It's also not a coffee-table cookbook -- the artwork is pleasant but not captivating, and there are no photographs of professional presentations of the dishes.
