Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets Review

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets

This is so much more than a simple raw food cookbook or commentary on raw food diets. I was surprised at the amount of information packed into this book. It has all sorts of nutritional information and easy to read tables on just about anything you can imagine relating to this way of eating. Here are just a few titles of the tables included: Research summary of the effects of cooking on phytochemicals, Calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate and water in raw food (6 pages long), Fatty acid composition of selected foods, Vitamins in raw foods, Minerals in raw foods, Vitamins A,C,E,K, and D: adult dietary reference intakes and intakes on raw and high-raw diets. And those are just a few. I like tables because I can get information at a glance and compare different values so this is really a good book for me.
You don't have to be a total raw food convert to enjoy this book. Even if you're just thinking about adding more healthful raw foods to your diet, I think you'll find this book as useful as I have. It starts out with a history of the raw food movement, gives lots of scientific evidence on why it can be a healthy way of eating, and then goes on to give all kinds of information, things you've probably never even thought about, on incorporating raw foods into your diet or going totally raw. It tells you what you need to know if you do decide to take the plunge, about getting all the nutrients you need.
There is a small section with raw food recipes and another section with full meal menus which I found especially helpful. I'm not looking (yet) to totally adopt this kind of diet but I would like to add a lot more raw food to our everyday meals. The recipes are pretty easy and there are a good variety. A few that I've tried and enjoyed are: Caesar's Better Salad, Warm Red Cabbage Salad, Morocc-Un-Butter and Marvelous Muesli. There's also a section on handling raw food safely and another on food enzymes. It's all easy to read and understand.
There's a large reference section, a glossary and an index. To me, this is important because I want to know the science or studies behind statements, not just take the author at his word. This is a high quality book, probably the best I've found on this subject.

This book contains a wealth of information on the raw food lifestyle. Nutrition experts Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina once again provide the essential information needed to safely embrace a new dietary lifestyle. As they did for vegetarians and vegans in Becoming Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan, they present the first authoritative look at the science behind raw foods. And both old converts to raw foods and new recruits alike will be fascinated with food historian Rynn Berry's presentation of the first narrative history of the rawfoods movement in the United States. More people are jumping onto the raw foods bandwagon either to lose weight, fight chronic health problems, or simply to benefit from the high level of nutrients found in uncooked or sprouted foods. Readers will find science-based answers to tough questions about raw foods and raw diets, easy-to-follow nutritional guidelines, and practical information on how to construct a raw diet that meets recommended nutrient intakes simply and easily. A section of over forty-five recipes provides dishes for any time of day and every occasion. Nutritional analyses are given for each recipe. Also included is a section on what foods and equipment are needed to get started and what raw food preparation basics are good to master. This book is a major contribution to the raw foods movement.

This book is a great place to start if you're curious about the growing raw food scene. Judita Wignall, in a warm, practical and easy tone, explains it all. She lays out the kitchen basics including tools and techniques, offers a range of wonderful recipes from the simplest, throw-it-together-and-eat-in-your-hand wraps to wonderful tasty raw main dishes and the prettiest desserts. Each recipe has a step-by-step photo series, showing exactly how to get it done. There's nothing precious or intimidating about her recipes, and she has included foods that are not too far removed from the already familiar, like her gorgeous raw vegan pizza, and her OMG brownies.
A great feature of the book is the planned menus, and the clear and easy nutritional information. She seems to have covered all the FAQs, including what she herself eats in a day.
And...the bonus DVD, tucked inside the cover, features Judita demonstrating recipes and techniques, which just brings it all to life.
Even if you're not into raw food, the book itself is a beautiful piece of art for its design and photography alone. Just a lovely thing to look at and admire.
I can't recommend this book highly enough if you're a beginner, and need guidance on how and why and what to do.

Recipes for Longer Life Review

Recipes for Longer Life

or you just want to stay healthy, this is a book that should be in your collection. It is an old book that I recently ordered for my own daughter because of her two year bout with anemia, poor liver function, low immune system and other maladies at only age 38, for which several doctors could find no remedy. It may be old, but the methods outlined in it work as well today as they did for me five years ago.
Between the two of us (she and I), she was able to go completely on this program and has just received normal blood tests for the first time in over 2 years. The time to these normal results from start to finish was about 4 months. A short time considering the years it takes for us to ruin our own health by eating the standard American diet (known as the SAD) and living the stressful and less-than-healthy lifestyle.
In addition to the recipes in this book, Ann Wigmore explains the factors in our lifestyle that make us sick, and gives the natural remedies with explanations of why they work. And they do work. I myself recovered from so-called "normal" challenges of aging 5 years ago while following this program, including arthritis, high blood pressure, acid reflux and other maladies. I now require no medications for anything.
I highly recommend this book for those who want to return to wellness enough to be proactive and take responsibility for their own health.

The World Goes Raw Cookbook: An International Collection of Raw Vegetarian Recipes Review

The World Goes Raw Cookbook: An International Collection of Raw Vegetarian Recipes

Lisa Mann's The World Goes Raw couples an intense and impressive knowledge on all aspects of raw cuisine with a concerned and caring writer's voice that makes the reading of the book feel like a chat with a very informed best friend. The research and experimentation that went into making the book are extensive, and the reason Lisa gives for writing the book is compelling. Ms. Mann details her own journey into good health and then invites you to come along. The result is a book that offers not only information on all aspects of the raw food life, but also the easy-to-follow blueprint to create a healthier and happier life for yourself. The book feels like a gift of possibility. It is uplifting, creative, and inspiring. I have already tried many of the recipes and have met with huge success. The "fondue" featuring a seductive blend of dates and ginger - expertly paired with pineapples - is simply divine. The "cashew cream" over cinnamon-dusted bananas is "to die for", and there is so much more. This cookbook is like none other I've ever owned before - and I've owned plenty - and is a must have!

Raw Energy: 124 Raw Food Recipes for Energy Bars, Smoothies, and Other Snacks to Supercharge Your Body Review

Raw Energy: 124 Raw Food Recipes for Energy Bars, Smoothies, and Other Snacks to Supercharge Your Body

I'm very impressed with Raw Energy. I've been looking for ways to add more raw food to my diet, but not necessarily at dinner. And I don't have time, nor the organization, for raw food cookbooks that make you start an entree 3-5 days ahead of time to sprout, soak and dehydrate the creation. This book focuses on snacks.
I like that most recipes use ingredients I already have around the house. There are a few with more exotic ingredients like spirulina powder, but these are easy to skip over if you don't wish to buy the ingredient. Each recipe is fairly simple and straight forward. Most use a blender or food processor, a few use a dehydrator (but if you're into raw food, you probably already have these anyhow). There are lots of recipes that omit frequently allergic ingredients such as dairy, egg or gluten so I can make snacks for my friend with food allergies.
I just made Cashew Maple Oatmeal Squares and they taste just like an out-of-the-oven oatmeal cookie, but cold. There's also recipes for breakfast cereals, "milk"shakes and smoothies, dips, trail mixes and lots of desserts.
This book is going to be getting a lot of use at my house.

I haven't been creative with my use of hemp seeds and hemp oil, so I was very excited to get Kristen's Hemp book. Up until now I've mainly used them in salad dressings and smoothies, so I was really excited to try some other things. I really love the Spicy Sweet Fitness Noodles! The Savory Protein Stuffed Mushrooms are soooo good. And the desserts are scrumptuous! I totally love the Superfood Hemp Cookies, too. Actually, all of the recipes I've made from Kristen's books have turned out fabulously! Of course the shakes and dressings are great and I especially love the cheezes and spreads. Another great book from Kristen and one I definitely use alot!

Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious & Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups Review

Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Soups: Delicious and Easy Raw Food Recipes for Hearty, Satisfying, Flavorful Soups
Average Reviews:

The recipes in this book are really good, and if that were the only criterion, I'd give this book 5 stars. I have really liked everything I've made. I don't mind that there are no pictures, either.
However, there is more to putting out a good recipe book than tasty recipes. Organization is important in order to produce a book that is easy to use. There is NO list of recipes in the table of contents, and NO index of recipe titles or of ingredients. This means you have to page through the entire recipe section to find 'Guacamole soup' or 'Summertime Corn Bisque'. There is simply no way to find recipes other than flipping through the book--the recipes aren't even in alphabetical order by title within the recipe section, either. There appears to be no discernible organization of these recipes within the book. The lack of an ingredients index means that you can't look up an ingredient and find all the recipes that contain that ingredient. These are *major* organizational flaws in a recipe book.
There also isn't clear delineation between recipes. That is, the recipes run together, rather than each recipe beginning at the top of a separate page. This bugs me, but not nearly as much as no index.
I have two of Kristen's books, and each one has the same first chapter, which is redundant. The other book also lacks an index or list of recipes in the table of contents.
If Kristen ever revises this book and the others in the series, I strongly advise the addition of an index, or at the very least a listing of the title of each recipe in the table of contents. The latter suggestion would not add to the cost of producing the books and would make them far easier to use than they are now.
