The Urban Vegan: 250 Simple, Sumptuous Recipes from Street Cart Favorites to Haute Cuisine Review

The Urban Vegan: 250 Simple, Sumptuous Recipes from Street Cart Favorites to Haute Cuisine

I just happened upon The Urban Vegan at my local "booksellers" and did not realize it was so new, it is copyrighted for next year! Lucky me! I loved the tone of Dynise's voice in her introduction. It was if she was articulating my thoughts exactly but much more mellifluously. I do not have any vegan friends so to read her words was really cool.
I am sure this cookbook/lifestyle guide/armchair international adventure will do very well. I made the Cauliflower-Chickpea Tagine tonight (adding potatoes since I am wheat free at the moment) and It Was Amazing. Tomorrow I am cooking up the Pumpkin Risotto with Sage and Sundried Tomatoes and have my eyes on the Chickpea Paprikash for next week. Yum! I am sure I will not run out of "What's for dinner?" for a long time to come. Thanks Dynise!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.
Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!

Student's Go Vegan Cookbook: Over 135 Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegan Recipes Review

Student's Go Vegan Cookbook: Over 135 Quick, Easy, Cheap, and Tasty Vegan Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book right when it first came out entirely upon the strength of Carole Raymond's other cookbook, the "Student's Vegetarian Cookbook," which I would describe as the perfect cookbook for people who can't cook. I was expecting more of the same easy, cheap, quick, and great tasting recipes I had found there. Unfortunately, the "Student's Go Vegan Cookbook" is a disappointment on every single one of those attributes. The recipes found here are more complicated, more expensive, more time consuming, and just less useful than the ones in the previous book.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are some hidden gems in this book as well, but that just it: they're hidden! Time and time again I find myself hungry and flipping through this book saying to myself: "nope... nope... nope..." because everything I see isn't a meal, it's just part of a meal. If you filter out the endless array of salads, dips, dressings, toppings, and side dishes you are left with a scant few actual meals. I'm an active (mostly) vegan male, and need hearty and healthy food to keep me running, not salads and side dishes! The idea seems to be that the author is giving you all the building blocks so you can go and create your own meal. All I can say is that's what people who can cook do... and if I could do that I wouldn't need this book in the first place!
I have no idea why Carole Raymond decided to organize the book like this. I don't have time to cook all day and combine 6 recipes into one full meal - that's why I bought this book. The great thing about the Student's Vegetarian Cookbook is that almost every page seems to have a complete meal on it, and the same thing just can't be said about the Vegan version. As a warning, I also find the book to be very heavy on Tempeh and Tofu recipes. I personally cannot stand Tempeh and don't like to eat tofu every day, so that also discounts a large number of recipes for me.
In considering this book, one does need to realize the reality that cooking vegan is harder then cooking vegetarian... but I don't think it has to be THIS hard. I think Carole Raymond needs to re-evaluate exactly who her target audience is here. I generally like Raymond's recipes, and I'd love to see a stripped down version of this book, with a renewed focus on quick, easy, complete meals. As things stand, there are some great recipes in this book... but I just don't find it all that useful.

This is one of the top five cookbooks I plan on rescuing in case of house fire. Just kidding, but I would immediately go out and get it again! Buy this book -- it's worth it just for the mac and cheeze, orange chick'n, and buffalo bites recipes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Did I mention the mac and cheeze? It's not a nutritional yeast sauce! It's incredible!
This book has a good range of simple idea-type recipes -- as in, recipes you can really put together quickly and throw in your own substitutions -- plus more still-easy-but-complex-in-flavor recipes for the scratch cook. Oh and I can't say enough about the barbecue sauce, too. I'm picky picky picky about BBQ sauce and the one in this book plus the one in Veganomicon are to live for.
This is my first attempt to start reviewing some of the zillions of cookbooks I own. Happy cooking!

1,000 Vegan Recipes (1,000 Recipes) Review

1,000 Vegan Recipes (1,000 Recipes)

1,000 Vegan Recipes is the unequivocal answer to the universal question asked of all vegans/vegetarians, "What do you eat?" With 1,000 recipes packed into a one volume tome I will no longer answer the question but merely hand over my copy of 1,000 Vegan Recipes! Contents include Appetizers and Snacks, Salads, Sandwiches, Pizza and More, Soups, Pasta and Noodles, Main Dishes, Vegetable Side Dishes, Breads, Desserts, Breakfast and Brunch, Beverages, and Sauces, Relishes and Condiments - Nothing has been missed, nothing has been left out!
The introduction covers all of the "whys" and "how to's" and the book itself is interspersed with tips and information. Robin also marks quickly made recipes with a circled "f" (for "Fast") and I was delighted to see so many little f's as I flipped through the book, especially in the main dishes section. I love to cook but I will be turning to these fast recipes for weeknight meal inspiration.
I will confess that I was a recipe tester for this book, but all that means is that I am able to finally share all the wonderful recipes I tested and have already been making this last year. My friends have been patiently waiting for the day that I no longer tell them, "It's a secret" and I have been bursting to share my favorite recipes with everyone. Such as "Golden Harvest Soup", not only is it packed with nutrients for a cancer fighting punch, but it is superbly delicious - the perfect amount of flavor and simplicity. I had a picky eater living with me last year but she devoured "Flower Power Granola Squares"! And of course the holidays this year would be nothing without "Ginger-Spice Brownies" - I plan on bringing them to every occasion.
As I flip through the crisp white pages of my soon to be spill-stained book I find myself famished and wanting to hit the grocery store on the way home for ingredients to "Beans Bourguignon", or "Tamarind Chickpea Stew" or maybe even "Tex Mex Lasagna". I'm dying to try "Soy-Tan Dream Cutlets". Of course don't get me started on what all I could do with "Vegan Wonton Wrappers". The Dessert section beckons me as well with delectably nutritious items as well as the sinfully delicious.
In case you can't tell, I'm enamored with 1,000 Vegan Recipes - you will be too!
