The Complete Vegan Cookbook: Over 200 Tantalizing Recipes, Plus Plenty of Kitchen Wisdom for Beginners and Experienced Cooks

I've found the recipes in this book to be, on average, very good to excellent. Many recipes are made entirely from vegetables you can get at the local farmers market. Dependance on soy and soy derivatives is (refreshingly) minimized. This book focuses more on wonderful and delicious recipes made from vegetable instead of trying to imitate or substitute for the usual meat and cheese dishes. No need to special order ingredients from Venezuela or the Ivory Coast either. I found this book approachable, practical, and with recipes that can fit into any meal, vegan or not. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in cooking with vegetables.

Giant Book Of Tofu Cooking: 350 Delicious & Healthful Recipes Review

Giant Book Of Tofu Cooking: 350 Delicious and Healthful Recipes

I was quite surprised by the sheer size of this book. It is quite large and contains over 250 pages, most of which are recipes. There is a brief introduction to various types of tofu and methods that affect texture, flavor, etc. There are also several pages on the variety of soy products currently available on the market and how to use them.As with most cookbooks, recipes are divided into tofu basics, breakfasts, appetizers, soups, salads, lunch and dinner, dressings, sauces and spreads, desserts, and a metric conversions chart, if you're interested. There is no lack of diversity in flavors here. There are plenty of "normal" recipes and creative variations thereof, as well as Indian, Mexcian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and a few others. Some are highly seasoned, others are very basic. Unlike some books I've seen, these don't look like 200 variations on the same recipe. There are color photographs every couple of pages and literally hundreds of recipes. Some emphasize tofu very strongly as a main ingredient and other incorporate it as one in many. There are definitely recipes here for those who LOVE the taste and texture of tofu, and plenty for those who want it in their diets but would prefer to not know it's there.ALL of these recipes are vegetarian, and many are vegan. There is no fish, or meat broths of any kind.Still, some are very quick recipes and some more complicated. The recipes are typed in a medium-sized print which is easy to read, and the steps are separated by spaces and numbered, making directions easier to follow. Quite a number of these recipes are also low in fat. There is definitely something here for everyone. I think it's an impressive and noteworthy collection in which many people would be satisfied. It is more than worth the price.

It's been the super food of the East for at least two millennia, and it's finally made a name for itself here. No matter what dish it's added to--from soups to desserts--tofu makes the meal healthier and better. On its own, this soft, white beancurd has virtually no taste, but it has a remarkable ability to "drink up' the flavors and seasonings it's marinated in. Plus, tofu comes in different textures, so it's a perfect substitute for meat, fish, cheese, or eggs. You've probably heard of its almost miraculous ability to lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, and according to the newest research, Alzheimer's, but you may not have known how to prepare it. This comprehensive, all-vegetarian tofu cookbook celebrates tofu's versatility 350 ways, with easy-to-follow recipes that will expand your horizons and tickle your tastebuds: Tofruitty smoothies, Tofu huevos rancheros, banana bread, mock tuna salad, tofu "crab" cakes, tropical cheesecake escape, and even pecan pie!

Vegan Planet: 400 Irresistible Recipes With Fantastic Flavors from Home and Around the World (Non) Review

Vegan Planet: 400 Irresistible Recipes With Fantastic Flavors from Home and Around the World (Non)
Average Reviews:

This book makes an excellent gift for someone just starting to explore the vegetarian lifestyle. Surprisingly, it is also an excellent resource for the tried-and-true vegan.
For those just familiarizing themselves with the vegan diet, the author explains all potentially new terminology and describes common ingredients used in vegan food preparation: tofu, seitan, and miso for instance. For the most part, his recipes use readily-accessible ingredients, available in most supermarkets. In the rare cases where exotic ingredients are called for, the appendix lists mail-order sources for those who may not live near a natural food store.
The book starts with an excellent first chapter on nutrition. The author notes that a vegan diet provides all essential nutrients, though without proper supplementation it can be deficient in vitamin B12. This deficiency is often considered by those reluctant to switch to a vegetarian diet as the "Achilles Heel" of a vegan diet. In fact, having just one easily-remedied deficiency makes the standard non-vegan diet look pretty awful in comparison. While a standard dairy-and-meat-based diet may not be deficient in vitamin B12, it is certainly problematic in its propensity to cause heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, and a wide range of other serious illnesses. In fact, as the author points out, a comprehensive set of long-term studies on diet and health done at Cornell University indicates that 80 to 90 percent of all cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other forms of degenerative illness are directly linked to the consumption of meat and dairy products. Talk about an Achilles Heel!
Interspersed between the recipes in this book are lots of hidden gems including lists of 10 environmental reasons to go vegan, 12 really great health reasons to go vegan, 7 great reasons to eat soy every day, and 9 compelling ethical reasons to go vegan. The author provides useful kitchen tips, such as stove-top cooking times for 15 kinds of grains and for 13 different beans. Nutritional profiles are provided for many foods, including the vitamin, mineral, and fatty acid content of 16 different nuts and seeds and 10 different kinds of sea vegetables.
For those interested in switching away from use of white sugar, the author introduces the alternative natural sweetener called stevia. He also provides guidelines for using maple syrup in place of white sugar in baking (indicating how to reduce the liquid in your recipe when you use a liquid sweetener instead of sugar). Furthermore, the author explains how to bake using egg alternatives.
Gosh, I haven't even mentioned the recipes themselves yet! The collection of tempting tasties covers the whole spectrum from A (Adzuki beans) to Z (Zucchini). 20 chapters of recipes provide great ideas for tasty chutneys, gnocchi, curries, pizzas, burgers, pancakes, "cheesecake", and so much more. This is the most comprehensive vegetarian cookbook I've ever come across.
This book is a great addition to any library of cookbooks, helpful to vegetarians and soon-to-be vegetarians alike. (Even meat-eaters won't feel deprived by the very creative recipes in this book.) I can't resist giving Vegan Planet my highest recommendation.

This book provides a wide array of completely vegan sauces, sides, entrees, and desserts that are all extremely low in fat and all very easy and quick to prepare. Almost every one of the recipes that I've tried were excellent(and I've made almost all of them. Of special note are the baked goods and desserts that are vegan and fat-free (or very low fat) yet resemble their dairy and egg laden counterparts. Favorites include eggless French Toast, Non dairy sour cream, tofu loaf (different from any 'meatloaf' tofu recipe you've tried), Drop biscuits, vanilla cake/muffins, and cheezecake.

This has become one of my favorite cookbooks and I'm not even vegetarian. The recipes are written in such a way that they are very easy to follow, and the author has included a brief description of each recipe that is both interesting and informative. The first recipe I tried was the Vegetable Barley Soup which is absolutely delicious. My husband raves about the Gazpacho, Pumpkin Walnut Baklava, and Chocolate Cheeseless Cake, to name a few. This beautifully photographed cookbook is one that both vegetarians and non-vegetarians would love to add to their collection.

Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook Review

Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook

First off, the food in this book is amazing. Vegan With a Vengeance was super great, but this is the friggin' BOMB!
Aside from the incredible food, the product description doesn't mention that the first part of the book is a great (and funny) read about HOW to cut and prepare different vegetables, how to cook different grains, etc...for someone like me, pretty invaluable stuff. Also cool if you're getting this for your "weird" vegan kid that is just learning to cook.
Also,, the icons are a big help (an icon tells you if you can make the meal under 45 min -or way less, another icon tells you if you can find everything at your regular Vons-type market, if there's soy, etc...)
The other review made a comment about the title, which I think is total genius. Then again, I get the HP Lovecraft/Evil Dead reference. What else could you call the "ultimate vegan cookbook" besides the "Veganomicon"??
Not only does this book have great recipes, but it will totally add ideas to your cooking arsenal. After making the "Black Bean Burgers", I am never buying packaged veggie burgers again!
p.s. do yourself a favor and make the "Leek and Bean Cassoulet with Biscuits".

This is the one cookbook I go back to over and over. Every single recipe I have tried has been absolutely delicious. Well worth reading the front section on selecting pastas, cheeses and olive oils. My favorites are: Pasta Primavera, Spaghetti with Pumpkin(which I have prepared and served at least 20 times this year), Roasted zucchini half moons with bow tie pasta, & the lasagnas. I am now purchasing additional books as gifts to my friends. You do not have to be vegetarian to love these dishes.

Some background - This past mid-April, my husband and I attended the 5-Day McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. Colleen was there as one of the chefs giving a cooking demo/lesson to help us learn how to cook food for our new healthy diet. My husband has always been an omnivore and swore he would never give up meat (but he was willing to attend the 5-day session with me). I have been what I call a fat 'imperfect vegan' for over 20 years (cheese, butter and oil were my vices). Enter Colleen. She prepared a few dishes out of this new book and passed around servings for us to eat. My hubby said: Babe, if we can eat like this all the time, I'll never miss the meat. And I agreed. We adopted a lowfat vegan diet that week, and have not looked back. I have cooked several of the recipes that Colleen gave us that week (all from the book) and they are all yummy. I have ordered the book because I want more. Colleen, I hope you are reading this: You are a wonderful, witty, talented chef. My husband and I loved your your cooking, and your wonderful sense of humor. Dr McDougall, Mary, Jeff, and Doug helped us adopt this new healthy diet, but you definitely sealed the deal. The 'No-queso Quesadillas' have been our go-to snack when we need a little something-something, now! Since April 15, I have effortlessly lost 15 lbs and my hubby has lost 12. Thank you SO much! We hope to see you again!
