Cafe Flora Cookbook Review

I wonder: what am I doing writing a review for a cookbook? I rarely write Amazon reviews and the few reviews I have written are related to a completely different genre of book. Plus, I've only recently taken a renewed interest in being in the kitchen - I don't suppose that makes me an "expert" by any stretch of the imagination.
But I wanted to share my opinion of this book with other readers. It's fantastic and the recipes are delicious.
Never before have I enjoyed a cookbook so much. Reading through the table of contents was enough to get my palate fired up. At the time of this writing, I've created over a dozen of the recipes in this book, and each one is a sure winner, not one is a reject. I might have tried more recipes by now, but the temptation to go back to a dish I've already tried is just too great. (We've done the Coconut Tofu with Sweet Chili Dipping sauce four times, now.)
How about a really wonderful Portobello Wellington with Madeira Sauce? Now THAT was a Thanksgiving dinner! Yam and Mushroom Enchiladas with Smoky Tomato Sauce? Spinach, Mushroom, and Gorgonzola in Puff Pastry with Red Pepper Coulis? Despite what I - a carnivore - have always thought, vegetarian cooking can be great. That's a claim I've never been able to make regarding any other vegetarian or vegan cookbook.
The book is extremely well laid out with timing suggestions, "prepare ahead" ideas, and handy tips for getting through the process without any unexpected surprises. Each recipe is preceded by a good description that makes you want to try it immediately. If a recipe has multiple components, each is presented as a logical and timed subsection of the overall plate.
I only wish I knew about this restaurant when I visited Seattle last year. Next time... next time.
Five Stars for the book that got me back into the kitchen after a long hiatus. Feel free to contact me with any questions, but I'll be busy cooking up the next Flora meal.

Fun 'n' fab 'n' filled with facts, this great book is the perfect answer to the question, "What should we do next weekend?" If you're a vegetarian like me who gets sick of being offered hot dogs at unimaginative 4th of July barbecues, you'll love the wide variety of offerings listed here. Spicing up the recipes are all kinds of party ideas and great trivia--who knew there were so many verses of "The Star Spangled Banner"? These authors did, and they've served all those verses up, along with 300 pages of other info, contest ideas, inventive invitations, costume recommendations, suggested soundtracks, and decorating details. This book makes throwing the party as much fun as attending.

Moosewood Restaurant Cooks for a Crowd: Recipes With a Vegetarian Emphasis for 24 or More Review

I originally bought this book for the kitchen at our organic farm, where we regularly feed >15 people a day. After reading it myself, I wanted a copy for home too. Anyone who's vegetarian will need to cook in quantity at some point (dinner parties, etc.), and this book makes it easy to do so. No more multiplying like crazy and ending up with haphazard results. I also liked that the ingredients were given by weight, which makes it much easier to measure out.

ExtraVeganZa: Original Recipes from Phoenix Organic Farm Review

I know, you're wondering about whether you should get this book, since it doesn't have many reviews yet and this is the first one. But let me tell you, I have over 150 cookbooks, and this one ranks in the best of them. It doesn't matter if you are a vegan, omnivore, or lacto-ovo-vegetarian - you will enjoy these recipes if you like vegetables, healthy grains, nuts, and legumes, the occasional sweet, and new and inventive ways to cook your favorite foods. Vegan foods, luckily, can be eaten by anyone - so just kick back and enjoy; this book makes it especially easy. Some recipes are wheat-free and others, like the vegetable mochi casserole, are gluten-free. The casserole is delicious, and the lemon sesame kale is my new favorite way to eat it. The Thai noodle salad is one of the best Thai dishes I have ever made. My boyfriend and I have greatly enjoyed these recipes, and I am confident you will, too.

Perfect Recipes for Having People Over Review

Perfect Recipes for Having People Over
Average Reviews:

Anderson's brief introduction emphasizes organization and planning, and the book's design is elegant - lots of full-page color pictures of finished dishes - and practical, with a tip guide at the bottom of each recipe.
She starts with the main course, grouped by occasion, from kitchen gatherings to barbecues, sit-down dinners and breakfast. "All the Rest" follows, from appetizers through dessert, including drinks and breads.
Anderson often offers a master recipe, which can be transformed with simple additions - quesadillas, for instance, or shish kebabs, which both come with a page of variations in spices and main ingredients. This is particularly true for the soups, like the Creamy Vegetable, which comes with 10 separate recipes and ideas for "hundreds" of variations.
Each recipe concludes with suggestions for when to serve and what to serve it with, variations, shortcuts, advance preparations and, my personal favorite, ideas for the leftovers.
For the dining room there's an Easy Baked Risotto which does away with much of the stirring and Beef Tenderloin with cracked pepper and a red wine pan sauce; more casual meals feature Oven-Barbecued Pork for sandwiches or carnitas and Lasagna made with both white and red sauce and no-boil noodles. Breakfast might be a savory baked strata, assembled the night before.
Side dishes are bright and imaginative, like Smoked Salmon and Watercress Salad with Red Onion-Caper Vinaigrette or Orange-Glazed Asparagus; desserts are simple and many are homey, like the Tender Yellow Cake and Five Variations. Drinks come by the pitcher.
There's nothing difficult here and there's plenty of range to suit every taste and every occasion. Anderson's fans ("The Perfect Recipe," "How to Cook Without a Book") will snap it up and anyone who entertains should find it a useful pleasure.

Feast of Soups Review

Feast of Soups

I have quite a few soup books, but this is the only one that receives regular use, and which I know I can count on for a delicious recipe each and every time. The book is simple, not containing many pictures or illustrations, but has hundreds of recipes in it from around the world. This is one of the only soup books I've seen which had multiple (no less than 5) different recipes and styles for tomato soup, it's selection is huge. It is obvious from the dialogue that the author is a soup lover and uses these recipes daily in her home, just like it should be. She details what makes soups not just good, but fantastic, like how to pick your ingredients for maximum flavor. There is a short section before each category of soups where she gives an overview of that soup, some insider tips on preparation, as well as suggestions on building a meal around them. Truly a great cook book, and a must for any soup lover.

Some background - This past mid-April, my husband and I attended the 5-Day McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, CA. Colleen was there as one of the chefs giving a cooking demo/lesson to help us learn how to cook food for our new healthy diet. My husband has always been an omnivore and swore he would never give up meat (but he was willing to attend the 5-day session with me). I have been what I call a fat 'imperfect vegan' for over 20 years (cheese, butter and oil were my vices). Enter Colleen. She prepared a few dishes out of this new book and passed around servings for us to eat. My hubby said: Babe, if we can eat like this all the time, I'll never miss the meat. And I agreed. We adopted a lowfat vegan diet that week, and have not looked back. I have cooked several of the recipes that Colleen gave us that week (all from the book) and they are all yummy. I have ordered the book because I want more. Colleen, I hope you are reading this: You are a wonderful, witty, talented chef. My husband and I loved your your cooking, and your wonderful sense of humor. Dr McDougall, Mary, Jeff, and Doug helped us adopt this new healthy diet, but you definitely sealed the deal. The 'No-queso Quesadillas' have been our go-to snack when we need a little something-something, now! Since April 15, I have effortlessly lost 15 lbs and my hubby has lost 12. Thank you SO much! We hope to see you again!
