Eat Away Diabetes Review

Eat Away Diabetes is extremely well researched and superbly written! Taking complex subject matter, the author uses practical explanations and analogies, thereby making diabetes much easier to understand. The information is current and extremely useful for people with Type 2 diabetes and those working to prevent this potentially devastating (but preventable) disease. Numerous charts and sidebars are used throughout which serve as excellent references in my practice as a registered dietitian. The author emphasizes the importance of exercise at length and explains the roles of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and herbs. Ms. Napier also provides 28 days of menus and their accompanying recipes (which are healthy, creative, and tasty). This book will remain a useful resource in my professional practice and daily life! Thank you, Kristine Napier!

You Don't Have to be Diabetic to Love This Cookbook: 250 Amazing Dishes for People With Diabetes and Their Families and Friends

While this cookbook is enjoyable reading, it is New York-centric and obviously written by a chef who has infinite ingredients at his command. Some ingredients not easily available in the hinterlands, and the cost of some recipes would be astounding, especially some of the fish and seafood dishes. For those who are addicted to reading cookbooks, it's an entertaining read. However, I didn't learn much about why the recipes are particularly applicable to diabetics, and I doubt that I will prepare many of the recipes.

The book food lovers with diabetes have been waiting for: a through-the-menu collection of 250 dishes to meet any craving, from hot and spicy to sweet and sour, from creamy to crunchy, from pastas to dessert. Written by Tom Valenti, one of America's Ten Best Chefs (Food & Wine) and a "clairvoyant in the kitchen" (Ruth Reichl, The New York Times)-and a diabetic-You Don't Have To Be Diabetic To Love This Cookbook is filled with recipes so delicious, so imaginative, so varied and enticing that it will turn the burden of following a diabetic regimen into a celebration of food. In fact, this is food for everyone in the family to sit down and enjoy, with no penalty to the non-diabetics. Valenti employs innovations and techniques that are a signature of his cuisine-acid to brighten flavors, unexpected combinations of texture and temperature, turkey bacon as a foundation ingredient to add a haunting smoky-salty quality-and he never resorts to imitation products. Recipes include Asparagus and Mushroom Risotto; Chicken Chaat; Filet Mignon with Black and Green Peppercorn Sauce; Snapper Piccata; Grilled Duck Breast Paillard with Orange, Onion, and Mint; Lamb Sausage with Warm Potato Salad; Shrimp and Tomato Ravioli; Goat Cheese Cake; Banana Mousse; Miniature Pumpkin Pies. Real flavors, real food, and finally, real pleasure, for America's 23.6 million diabetics.

Gluten-free, Sugar-free Cooking: Over 200 Delicious Recipes to Help You Live a Healthier, Allergy-Free Life

This is the first BOTH gluten-free AND sugar-free cookbook I managed to find and I absolutely LOVE it!
There's hardly a recipe I don't like, and all of the ones I tried are absolutely delicious and quite simple. (e.g. one of my favorites is the crepes recipe)
It's perfect not only for people with celiac disease and other food intolerances, but also for health-conscious gourmets who while trying eating healthy, are not willing to give up the taste.
Oh, and the ingredients are NOT hard to find, provided you've heard of sth called heath food store.
If there's one thing I'd improve, it would be more recipes using stevia, which is hardly present in the book. Agave's great but stevia's way better. I also hope that the author will discover coconut flour and maybe utilize it in her future recipes.

Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery: Over 140 Delicious Low-Fat High-Protein Recipes to Enjoy in the Weeks, Months and Years After Surgery

You know, one of the reasons I underwent a gastric bypass surgery in December was to escape the hordes of diet religionists--those odd folks who have found the solution to their dietary woes and will proselytize until the cows come home!
Enough, says I, of no-carb, low-carb, non-fat, low-fat, this, that and the next! Surgery so altered my body that many of the choices I once made are invalid--out of my hands! I can't eat the crap that made me fat anymore because now it makes me sick.
And yet, imagine my dismay when, recovering from surgery, I found even more no-carb religionists among my surgically altered compatriots. One woman's intolerance of my ideas was such that I had to filter her e-mail directly into the trash! Even though I had now an anatomy that wouldn't tolerate certain foods, she insisted that I had to further subjugate myself to her odd notions of nutrition. No carbs ever again!
And so it was with a sigh of relief that I opened this book to read my new mantra: all in moderation.
After all, surgery means that you can eat what you love. You can have good food and love it. What you can't do is binge. What you can do is make a meal of fat and sugar. And this book points the way.
Salads, entrees, desserts, it's all here. And more: suggestions on how to change the contents of your refrigerator and pantry to make eating easier.
After all, life after surgery need not be deprivation. Most of got fat on deprivation and our inevitable gut-busting reaction to that, so a book that tells me how to enjoy what I now eat is a wonder to behold.
Thank you, Ms Levine! And thanks to my friend Laureen who recommended it!

In April 2003 Patt Levine underwent "Lap-Band" gastric surgery, one of the primary bariatric surgeries being widely practiced today. As a lifelong foodie, she was expecting the worst when her surgeon's nutritionist handed her dietary guidelines to follow post-surgery, and she was right. With her decades of cooking skills, she immediately set out to devise low-fat dishes that would be just as delicious pureed and chopped as they would be served whole. As an added problem, she wanted to cook for her husband at the same time. This first-ever cookbook for the hundreds of thousands who are lining up for bariatric bypass surgery is proof that it can be done. With collaborator Michele Bontempo-Saray, the author has created 125 recipes that contain no added sugar, are very low in fat, and get their carbohydrates almost exclusively from fruits and vegetables. Each recipe includes specific guidelines for preparation of the dish for every stage of the eating programs for Lap-Band, gastric bypass, and Biliopancreatric Diversion Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) patients, as well as suggestions for sharing meals with those who have not gone through gastric surgery. Creative recipes cover every meal and food-breakfast and brunch, soups, vegetables, main courses, and sweet indulgences.
