This book not only introduced me to a number of 'new' authors/illustrators but helped me connect with some old favorites. Some of the recipes were child friendly but all of those I have tried are great to serve on the day we check one of the author's books from the library. Great way to help us connect our children with good reading. I have also cheated and on the day we ordered pizza we shared the broccoli recipe from Judy Casely -- knowing that the children would LOVE the pizza and not like the broccoli. They were glad to find out that Casely likes pizza too although the broccoli is heathier. Of course we also tried the English muffin pizzas too -- great for lunch. One day we had a 'literary luncheon' with Paul Brett Johnson's fried chicken Keiko Kasza's potato salad and Mary Casanova's crazy chocolate cake. All were teacher friends. Introduced them to some great authors and great books. This is a fun way to start a book conversation and would make great items for our book group. wish there was an adult version as we like the little bits of information about the books, and the authors, along with the themes shared. Lots of good food and lots of good anecdotes.
Also recommended: I think I read that a new title will be out next year -- Authors in the Pantry. I'll look forward to i

I am still a bit of a novice when it comes to cooking GFCF, we have only been following this diet for a few months now, but this book makes it easy to create meals and snacks that my children will eat. The Wonderful Waffles recipe is better that anything you will find in the freezer section of your local grocery store-GFCF or otherwise-and there are lots of tips & tricks to get more nutrients into your kids. Not only are the recipes good, the info presented on the diet is done in an easy-to-read format. It is all explained in great detail, how it works and why it works. Also, at the top of each recipe, there is a key that shows which allergens are present, a real time-saver for those of us dealing with multiple food sensitivities-you know at a glance. Overall, I am happy with my purchase, I would recommend it to others, especially if you are just starting out on the GFCF diet & need some guidance.

Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer has created the ideal package for a wide variety of families: those with kids on the autism spectrum, those with kids who need to eat a GFCF diet, or those who just want a way to start cooking with their children! While the book is aimed at parents and teachers, the author cleverly includes a CD-ROM that's aimed at the kids. Parents can set up the laptop in the kitchen (far enough away from any liquid ingredients of course!) and show their children step-by-step how each recipe is made. It's an ideal method for the newest chefs in every house.

Even shopping for ingredients or cleaning up together provides teachable moments and builds independence. Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook Review

Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook

I have Lyme disease for quite a while now and been in treatment for over a year-and-a-half. I had made great progress but suspected food allergies. I found Recipes for Repair at their website [...] and looked over the 4 phase plan.
The book starts with helpful information on the Lyme/inflammation connection which I found very helpful. At the beginning of each phase it lists the allowed foods in a simple format and explains how long one should stay in each phase.
Phase I was scary for me, I have to admit. It's basically a week of detox which means lots of fish and veggies. Much to my surprise, my husband and I loved the meals! Also, before starting phase I, I really looked over the food list to see what I could snack on and what I needed to prepare before-hand to make meal preparation easier. For instance, I made up the mayonnaise and almond meal. You will need to do this before each phase so that you are prepared to cook.
Phase II was a delight. It just adds more safe foods to phase I and my family and I found it to be delicious and doable. Phase III - even better. As of today I cannot do phase 4 which adds in wheat and dairy. I do use recipes from this book for about 4 times a week. Overall this has been one of the best cookbooks I've ever invested in. The pages are tattered from use which is a good sign!
If there is one drawback - if you are bedridden and tired, some of the recipes may be too long and involved. Sometimes I do recipes in chunks. I'll chop veggies and store in fridge or make double batches of rice for two recipes. I think of ways to get around that.
Overall, I feel healthier and better following this diet. I would highly recommend this cookbook if you have Lyme disease or any type of inflammatory condition.
