Slow-Cooker Recipes Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch) Review

Slow-Cooker Recipes Cookbook (Gooseberry Patch)

First, let me say that I am a HUGE Gooseberry Patch fan. Currently I own six of their books: Slow Cooker Recipes, Best-Ever Casseroles, What's for Dinner?, Come on Over, One-Pot Meals and From Grandma's Kitchen. I just LOVE the books. The recipes are very easy, not too fancy, don't take long and always taste good. They are easy to read and the spiral binding keeps the books open flat. I think out of all of the books, I have only made one thing that I didn't care for. They are just great, great books to have around and I love the little tips on each page, the way that every book is broken up by meats and categories and just all of the other little helpful charts and equivalents that are in each book. In my opinion, they are just great additions to any cookbook collection and I love having them in my kitchen.
For this book, Slow Cooker Recipes, I have only made one recipe so far since it is a fairly new purchase for me, and it was Spanish rice. I am making my second today from it, Saucy Potatoes and Ham, and it just really has a lot of basic recipes for the slow cooker. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of fancy slow cooker books as well, but sometimes you just want to throw the food in and go and have a nice hot comforting meal at the end of the day and not have to create a sauce, braise the meat, etc, etc, etc.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a nice, well-rounded slow cooker book to add to their collection.

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Volume II, Regional Comfort-Food Classics Review

The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Volume II, Regional Comfort-Food Classics

I like this cookbook better than Alley's first slow cooker book. Because it's regional foods, the recipes are still varied, but the ingredients are a little less exotic. This book contains close to 60 solid recipes with beautiful photography. Best of all, the author admits she tested the resipes on various brands of slow cookers, something that didn't quite happen with the first book.
The intro pages contain useful info. I was pursuaded to whip out a thermometer and test my cooker's low and keep warm settings. I've found that my model runs extremely hot and I'm sending it in for warranty evaluation.

With its emphasis on quality ingredients, nuanced global flavors, and sumptuous presentation, the original GOURMET SLOW COOKER inspired discerning home cooks to dust off-and fall in love with-their slow cookers again. Back by popular demand, Lynn Alley serves a generous second helping of sophisticated yet easy-to-prepare slow-cooker recipes, this time with a focus on regional comfort food. Packed with classic and innovative dishes designed to delight family and guests alike, THE GOURMET SLOW COOKER: VOLUME II will satisfy fans' hunger for new recipes-and encourage even more busy home cooks to join the bandwagon.ReviewsRecommended for "the cook who wants ease, but with more flavor than the bland crock-pot cuisine your mother made."-Portland Oregonian

I've made several of the recipes and include at least three nights per week where I serve a chicken dish. It's healthier and much cheaper than most cuts of beef. Two of my favorite recipes in this book are Italian Chicken and Broccoli, and Just A Peach Of A Chicken. I never knew chicken and sweet potatoes would taste so good together!

The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook (Everything Series) Review

The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook (Everything Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook is a welcome addition to my cookbook library. Other crock-pot cookbooks I've checked out from the library rely on processed foods and many unhealthy ingredients that I wouldn't want to serve my family, but this cookbook emphasizes fresh produce, dairy, and meat products that I can buy in the grocery store. Amazingly, this cookbook has two vegetarian chapters - one vegetarian and one for vegan recipes (no dairy products, eggs, or meat). There are other vegan and vegetarian recipes throughout the book, too - not just in those two chapters. I really appreciate that because we entertain vegan friends and it's great to have something delicious to serve them rather than the same-old pasta they get everywhere.

I've tried five recipes from this book so far and every one of them has been really tasty and so easy. (Great to use the slow cooker in summer when you don't want to overheat your house.) The Hot and Sour soup tasted even better than the soup at our local Chinese take-out place. The Strawberry Pandowdy is a really different dessert idea for my family and tasted so good with vanilla ice cream. The Turkey White Chili is so good that I made it twice already. I brought Baba Ganoush and Creamy Low-Fat Spinach Artichoke Dip to a potluck and both were huge hits, gone in minutes. I am going to give this cookbook and a slow cooker to my friends who are getting married this fall. I am looking forward to using this cookbook again and again. Highly recommended to everyone who has a slow cooker.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series) Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love my crockpots (I have two oval ones in different sizes). I have several crockpot cookbooks in my bookshelf and have also read many others which I borrowed from the library. After reading these books, I came to a sad conconclustion that most people who use crockpot are not "real cooks" from many cookbook authors assumption; they write books for those who use a crockpot to make "canned soup+meat+frozen/canned veggie dishes."
I like quick and easy dishes and use canned soup occasionally but I don't want them to be the main item of my cooking.
With this thought, I was surfing the net a couple of days ago hoping to find a crockpot cookbook using fresh wholesome food and I came across this book.
The authors of this book created crockpot recipes for a cook like me (if you agree to my comment above, you will be happy to see this book!). After I read a couple of reviews by other Amazon users and bought this book (along with the Gourmet Slow Cooker Cookbook) from Amazon.
Yes, it requires more prep time and more ingredients but isn't it worth making that much efforts for healthier and tastier meals?! YES!!
Also, most ingredients appeared in this book are common items in my kitchen.
The only minus (4 stars istead of 5 stars) is the lack of photos of the recipes. I read cookbooks for plesure and those sumptuous looking photos are important to me. I know it makes the book more expensive if you have photos but it would be great if there are several pages of photos under each category to show how good these dishes look! I would definitely pay several more dollars for the photos for this book!

Crock-Pot Incredibly Easy Recipes Review

Crock-Pot Incredibly Easy Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the cookbook that started my love affair with the crock pot. There are several chapters in this book that are really useful for saving time and money (especially for me, a graduate student), including the "one-step" dishes (where you just throw everything into the crock pot and turn it on) and the "4-ingredients or less" dishes. My brother first gave me this cookbook for Christmas when I was doing my Master's, and when I got back to school from visiting my family, the first thing I made was orange chicken from this book, a recipe that my fiance affectionately calls "soda chicken" because the only ingredients are orange soda, soy sauce, and chicken. That's *really* good for those of us on a budget. What I especially love about this book is that it includes images. Now, granted, the images often look nothing like the food that comes out of the crock pot (and seriously, often look like there's no way that someone made them in a crock pot), but it's fun to compare what you've made to what it looks like. There is a wide variety of recipes in this book, but it's short enough that I've now gotten to the point that I've almost made all of them! It also started my blogging about slow cooking, where I rate specific recipes from this and other slow cooker cookbooks (see my profile for more info).
