Being a pharmacist gives Suzy a lot of credibility with many people. Few doctors or pharmacists bother to list side effects of medications. If they did a lot of people might be put off taking their medications. Suzy informs you in a balanced way. It's nice to see a pharmacist pointing out when natural therapies are superior to medications.
Suzy also discusses the link between natural products and medicines ie. medicines are usually just synthesised natural products and this synthesis is usually just for purposes of profit (you can't patent a natural molecule). The beauty of many natural approaches is that they lack the side effects of the synthetic version (Suzy explains some of the reasons why this may occur)... and if that's the case it's worth knowing.
Equally useful is knowing which things to supplement with if you are on medications. Suzy does a first rate job listing the vitamins and minerals that are depleted in the body by certain medications and suggests you supplement with these. This is sensible advice.
If you have diabetes then you owe it to yourself to read books like this which are fact/research based. They will give you strong insights into the causes and treatment of diabetes.
This book suffers from a few too many typo's. Please fix some of them?
More importantly there are a couple of factual errors that Suzi ought to correct. It was annoying to find the entire book referring to EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) as fish oils (EPA/DHA) and various other types of oils:
EFA's are defined oils the body can not produce. The only two EFA's are ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) an Omega3 oil (flax is one source of it) and LA (Linoleic Acid) an Omega6 oil (Sunflower is the most commmon source). It's a common error which many authors are making. Please someone stop and read a definition? Then get out a flow diagram of Omega3 and Omega6 derivative pathways? They show some very interesting things including that EFA's trigger your bodies production of anti-coagulants and anti-inflammatories... a very useful thing in diseases which have both a coagulation and inflammatory component.
Suzy mis-quotes Dr Michael Holick (a dermatologist) on VitD: Suzy recommends people stay out of the sun between 11am-3pm. Holick points out that it is only between 11am - 3pm that UVB is present and that's what you need to produce VitD. He does say you only need about 10 minutes and not to stay out too long. This was probably just a typo... but it would be nice if someone corrected it.
There are a few more things Suzy could have added to the book like the link between fructose/sucrose and uric acid... which then triggers inflammation and the inflammatory process is involved in diabetes.
You don't have to be diabetic to read this book as it has lots of useful information that's just as applicable to non-diabetics.
Well done Suzy.
:-)

Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights: Recipes for Every Season, Mood, and Appetite Review

Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights: Recipes for Every Season, Mood, and Appetite

I received this book two weeks ago and it has already become a permanent fixture in my cooking repertoire. First, this is not a how-to diet book, this is first and foremost a cooking book. That it is filled with Ms. Dahl's own story about food and weight is simply a bonus, a beautifully written ribbon that laces through the story and ties it all together.
This book is broken down into four sections - Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer, further divided into Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and each section starts with a few pages of Ms. Dahl's lovely stories, starting as a youth in the US and UK, cooking with her mom and grandmother, along through her days modeling, and learning to find balance and harmony in her diet, up until present day. Peppered throughout are Ms. Dahl's sweet line drawings.
The first thing I noticed about this book is the quality. From the heavy paper, to the impeccable photographs, from the seemingly perfumed smell of the book to the careful attention to detail throughout, this book screams quality and care. I normally abuse my cookbooks and after a while they are covered in tomato splatters, greasy fingerprints and folded pages, but this book begs to be treasured. Despite having worked my way through half of the recipes, it remains pristine.
The recipes themselves are wonderful. Looking over my notes from cooking, one word pops up over and over: simple. Ms. Dahl's recipes are simple to cook and wide open to improvisation, should you be lacking in some of the ingredients. Each recipe builds off of the premise of quality ingredients and simple preparation and the reward is a delicious dish that needs no heavy spicing or fat to improve the flavor.
The rhubarb yogurt is mouthwatering: tangy, sour and sweet with a nutty crunch in each bite. The Beetroot soup is earthy and creamy, it fills your mouth with flavor and looks amazing sitting in the bowl. The Quinoa Salad with tahini dressing is one of those recipes that you find yourself craving all the time, with its nutty soy-sweet dressing, fluffy quinoa and a fresh crispness from the raw vegetables. The Fish Cakes forgo the usual breading in favor of a fresh, simple approach that tastes like you spent hours. The Cinnamon peaches with yogurt are a decadent breakfast that feels more like indulging in dessert for breakfast without all of the guilt. The chicken stew was incredibly easy but tastes sophisticated with a variety of flavors, from the juicy chicken to the pop of the olives and the licorice zing from the fennel. The Crab and Fennel salad is crisp and cool, perfect for the heat of summer... I could go on. I've been living off of the recipes in this book for two weeks and each meal is delicious, exciting and takes hardly any time to prepare. Each recipe is simple enough that you will find yourself whipping them up on a whim and never needing to order take out when you get home late from work.
My only complaint about this book, if you could call it that, is that some of the recipes make portions a good deal larger than necessary. Most of the recipes are meant for two but we could never finish all of the food and ended up having enough for one more serving, sometimes two. The recipes are measured in US and UK measurements and include both terms for items that have different names in the US and UK.
I would recommend this book for everyone. From the first time cook to the experienced chef, from the Sophie Dahl fan to the person interested in cooking that has never even heard her name. If you enjoy cooking you will enjoy cooking out of this book.

This book is laid out in simple, easy to read sections that give everyone tools to eat healthier and be happier about their food choices. Whether you are a meat lover looking for heart healthier choices, or a person who has moved totally away from animal based products, this book has much to offer. What I particularly enjoyed was how author Alexandra Jamieson approached the subject of Living Vegan in a way that makes it accessible for readers with all levels of interest. She also is extremely skillful at offering ideas and approaches that will allow vegans and non-vegans to enjoy each other's company at meal times. This book is filled with useful tips and strategies, recipes and cooking tips. It addresses a wide range of things including menus and meal planning, cooking at home and eating out, spices and storing food, supplements and snacks, dealing with finicky eaters, weight loss and even how to counter what commercials are teaching your kids. Ms. Jamieson excels at delivering the content in a relaxed non-judgmental tone while educating readers in the benefits and ease of Living Vegan. By the way, this may sound silly but even the index in the back of the book is interesting! Get your own copy and see.
