As someone who keeps kosher and is looking to learn how to cook I checked this book out from my library with high expectations. Unfortunately it is not the best cook book. My problem is that if you are learning to cook or do not have much experience with the cooking a lot of the recipes in this book are complicated. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I was expecting peanut butter and jelly. Kosher cooking is all ready more expensive and complicated. So why use recipes involving pricey and hard to get ingredients like venison or buffalo. I realize Frankel's background is a chef and owning restaurants however a lot of use just want good food that is simple to make. I have no doubt that the all the recipes in the book taste great. It's just that most people don't have the time to make them. Frankel talks about not using non dairy substitutes to make dairy desserts parve because they won't taste as good. That's nice we all know butter makes desserts taste good but keeping kosher means you can not have dairy desserts if you have meat meals like a lot of us do on holidays not to mention butter is not healthy. Frankel owned the Shallot's restaurant in New York which I ate at several years ago but is now closed. She used to own the Shallots in Chicago but no longer owns it. In addition that restaurant has changed location several times. The reason I mention this is because as a chef she doesn't seem to have the best track record with her restaurants. I suggest any book in the Kosher by Design series or anything by Joan Nathan or Rabbi Gil Marks which are all better kosher cookbooks.

Quick & Kosher - Recipes From The Bride Who Knew Nothing Review

You aren't going to find any "OMG WOW" recipes in here. Maybe one or two. But what you will find are staple kosher dishes with really really easy and tastey ingredients.
Yes some of the recipes may seem like no brainers "duck sauce, ketchup & pepper flakes" over chicken. But I remember when I knew NOTHING in the kitchen and that would have been a help.
Teaching me how to make a loaf of gefilte fish..while for some people this may seem like a no-brainer..there was a time when I needed to be taught how.
This cookbook will teach you ALL those "kosher food basics" and even toss in a few more. (curried coconut couscous.. it was AMAZINGly delicious).
I am now an experienced cook, used to making complicated and interesting recipes that use 3 pieces of equipment and an array of pots and pans. I look forward to trying out more of these recipes which bring back the days of learning how to "boil water".
Don't be fooled though.. the recipes may be simple.. but from the looks of them.. they will be YUMMY!
If you are looking for more "original" and "inventive" recipes.. you might try to Susie Fishbein cookbooks. (Be prepared to pull out all your pots and pans..)

I have used this book 3 times now and referenced it many more times. I think it was a bargain and would be at twice the price. the recipes are easy to understand and execute. The results were excellent and hubby and daughter asked only, "when are we having that again?"

Soup: A Kosher Collection Review

Soup--A Kosher Collection is an excellent book! I never realized kosher soups were so easy to prepare and so delicious. Ms Reiss has included a recipe for every occasion; there is a huge selection of soups for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. Everything from old favorites such as chicken soup to new gems like curried red lentil soup or saffron garlic fish soup. The blueberry and rosemary soup was a fantastic surprise! I just bought the book and have made 12 of the over 150 recipes. Each recipe I made was a big hit with my family. The chocolate soup was a great treat. Ms Reiss' easy to follow recipes are accompanied by excellent definitions and cooking tips. I already bought a few copies for holiday gifts this year.
