This is a great cookbook. The best thing about it is not the yummy recipes, but the accessibility of the authors! You can reach them through their website and they are truly genuine and nice. The cookbook features cute drawings and pictures, fun comments, Jewish flair in some of the recipes, unique things you might not find other places, homemade health and beauty product recipes, instructions on how to make safe household cleaners, treats for your animal friends, a section on Kids' Stuff, and the ever-useful "45 Things to do with vinegar" section (that really came in handy!). This book is beginner-vegan-friendly. Most of the recipes are relatively easy to prepare and require minimum time and effort. The dessert section ROCKS! Try the Chocolate peanut butter cups...if you never thought you'd have them again, here they are, in full force! Yum! I've only tried a few recipes so far, and they've all been delicious. These Canadian punk rock wimmin have put together a great collection of vegan recipes. My only complaints with this book are that it lacks an index (which I'm told by the authors was supposed to be in there but didn't make it to the printer!), and several of the recipes contain bee products. bee pollen, beeswax, and honey are all used a bit in the book, especially in some of the smoothies and in the health and beauty products. I was disappointed about that, but have just avoided making the recipes that require those products. Other than that, the book is great.

Big Green Cookbook: Hundreds of Planet-Pleasing Recipes and Tips for a Luscious, Low-Carbon Lifestyle Review

Big Green Cookbook: Hundreds of Planet-Pleasing Recipes and Tips for a Luscious, Low-Carbon Lifestyle

I have been eating local food for quite a while now. But I never had any cookbook other than some vegetarian cookbooks that were close to my way of eating. So when I saw several green-type cookbooks come out recently, it had me curious. The Big Green Cookbook was the one that I ended up picking mostly because it had so many recipes and I wanted a cookbook, not a book book. Luckily this cookbook not only had all the recipes that has already helped me cook more interesting recipes, using ingredients by season that I can find (mostly locally), it had so many tips (not sciency/texty) that were extra helpful. The 27 tips in the front of the book are great. And several I have never thought of before. I love how the tips are laid out with all the recipes too, and leaving it up to everyone to go as green as they want to go with a friendly tone. For me it's pretty green. But also the cookbook works for my boyfriend who wants a little meat from time to time even though I'm still trying to get him to give it up completely. I'm enjoying this cookbook more than expected.

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love Review

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-Free Lunches Kids and Grown-Ups Will Love

I just received my copy of Vegan Lunch Box after much anticipation. I was a fan of the blog that inspired the book and for some reason expected the format of the book to be similar, which is what appealed to me. Unfortunately, the entire book is laid out in a new way.
First of all, there are virtually no pictures (save for a special insert in the middle of the book), and none to accompany the recipes. There are very few set "menus" except in sections for special occasions and a few to kick off your thinking. The recipes are divided into apps, salads, soups, sandwiches, main courses, sides, breads, desserts and beverages, which is useful, though there are a few stand-by recipes in here I think she could have skipped for most of us- veggie dogs and baked beans for example, takes up an entire page.
The recipes go perhaps a bit beyond lunch- I won't be making soups or homemade beverages for my child's lunch box- but that's ok, it makes it a bit more versatile as a book for veggie families.
What I found helpful about the original blog was the creativity of how Jennifer, the author, put the meals together in the bento lunchboxes she created. The combinations of food items and what her child choose to eat and appreciated. It's not the recipes I struggle with, it's how to put together an appealing lunch for a vegetarian child (and one that her classmates will envy!).
That said, this is a useful book and a must have for parents to new vegetarians, and does have plenty to offer the veteran as well. I just wish they had followed the format of the blog a little bit more closely. The book does mention that all the original recipes are on the blog archive- but that's why I purchased the book, so I could have that information in a book format.
