The Gluten-Free Nutrition Guide Review

This book is a great first book for gluten-free initiates. I've been eating a gluten-free diet for about a year now--reading tons of literature on the subject--so most of this book was a review for me. However, there were some gems about certain nutrients that I may lack and creative ways to add them to my diet. The recipes were also helpful and quick to make, unlike many other gluten-free recipe books where you have to have custom flour blends on hand to make anything.

The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook: Two Hundred Gourmet & Homestyle Recipes for the Food Allergic Family Review

The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook: Two Hundred Gourmet and Homestyle Recipes for the Food Allergic Family

This cookbook was a very helpful addition to my library. I have tried 7 recipes so far and my husband and kids loved them all. I can't believe it! My 11-year-old has multiple food allergies and my 5-year-old's allergist suggested that we try to go organic because of some ADHD-type issues (possible allergies to food additives, pesticides or preservatives?) and this seems to be a perfect resource.
I like the juxtaposition of simple recipes for meat and potatoes types like my husband (meatloaf, swedish meatballs, coleslaw, chocolate cake, apple and cherry pie, mashed potatoes, cream soups, soft pretzels, shepherd's pie, chili, pot pie, banana bread, cornbread) with the more sophisticated recipes for things like osso bucco, chicken marsala, pomegranite glazed rock cornish game hens, curried lamb, and vietnamese summer rolls.
You get an authentic feeling when the author writes about her italian dishes. She often gives familial/personal anecdotes which are fun to read. I wish my food heritage was so rich!
As for some of the negative comments I've seen here, I'm surprized. Substitutes are always offered for people with severe wheat allergies. She has a section where she talks about mixing types of flour (specifically as an alternative to spelt) to get optimal results and she offers another book as a resource. In the beer-batter chicken nugget recipe, she suggests a specific brand of wheat-free beer (and, by the way, the alcohol cooks out). I agree about the chopped livers, sorry...but there are 199 other recipes I'll try. She has included a great pantry list.
I found spectrum oils at my local health food store. The author also included a resource section and the website for spectrum oils is there. To the person who couldn't find Spectrum, maybe ask Spectrum directly where your closest source may be?
It's so frustrating when the world seems to be trying to hurt your child by mislabeling, misdiagnosing and misunderstanding allergies. Your temper can get the better of you; mine has. I believe this cookbook may be one of a few that offers real advice and real alternatives.

The Quinoa Cookbook: Over 70 Great Quinoa Recipes Review

This is the quinoa book I've been looking for!
I've been wanting to cook with quinoa after seeing a couple of good-sounding recipes demonstrated on TV shows. In addition, some members of my family have food allergies, and others are sensitive to certain foods, so I'm always looking for ingredients that are both healthy and generally non-allergenic.
Quinoa seemed to meet my requirements, but... well, even my favorite "healthy" cookbooks didn't offer many recipes. The recipes that I could find included ingredients that were a little too healthy to be popular in my home (meaning: did not resemble junk food in any way).
So, when I found this cookbook, I was very pleased. There's something for everyone -- including picky eaters -- in these recipes.
The recipes are simple and most ingredients are very normal. They don't require a trip to several gourmet, health food or ethnic grocers. (I don't have time for that.)
This cookbook's recipe measurements are in teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, etc., as well as in grams and litres. So, I can recommend this cookbook to friends in America and in Europe. I like that.
I especially like the section that explains a variety of ways to cook quinoa. It's not one of those grains or seeds that require overnight preparations or complicated/gourmet cooking methods. That's another big plus, with my busy schedule.
In general, this cookbook takes the mystery and anxiety out of quinoa. In today's economy, I'm careful to buy only groceries that I'll actually cook and my family will enjoy. This cookbook showed me that quinoa is a basic staple for most kitchens, and can be used in many ways and a wide range of cooking and baking styles.
Like another reviewer, I wish this book had more photos. I respond very visually to the world around me, so I want to see a dish that makes me say, "Ooh, that looks yummy!" The pictures in the book are very appealing... I just wanted more of them.
On the other hand, the recipes are so straightforward, my mouth was watering even without lots of photos. So, the illustrations aren't a big issue; I'm only mentioning this because I wouldn't want someone to dismiss this book because it's mostly text. (But, within a few minutes of skimming the many delicious-sounding recipes, I think you'll be pleased with this book, too.)
The health information about quinoa is especially motivating. My initial interest in quinoa has been... well, from seeing Emeril cook with it on "Planet Green" TV shows. However, after reading quinoa's history, health-related information, and the many ways to use quinoa, I'm amazed this isn't considered a basic ingredient in all kitchens.
(I predict that it will be, when more people learn how to cook with quinoa. It's healthy, affordable, delicious, and easy to cook with.)
This book provides far more interesting information and ready-to-use recipes than most "health food" cookbooks, and it's very well written.
If you've had any interest in cooking with quinoa, this cookbook is probably all you'll need to become a quinoa enthusiast.

Great cookbook! I have been cooking allergy free for my son for approx 2 years now. He is allergic to eggs, soy, dairy, wheat and tree nuts. It is hard to find a cookbook that is sensitive to all of the top 8 allergens. This one does, with the exception of just a couple of recipes. I purchased this cookbook to find some new ideas. I have started to notice that the varying cookbooks tend to rely on one specific type of gluten free flour. This one is rice flours and tapioca flours which can have a little grittier taste. The last cookbook I used it was oat flour (Sophie Safe) and those recipes tend to crumble. It is nice to have a few new recipes and to try new ingredients to see which ones work for you. I still love Sophie Safe, but am enjoying this cookbook just as much! If you cook for someone with allergies, you know how challenging it can be. I would recommend this cookbook highly!! Good luck!!

Each of the 150 recipes included in this family-friendly cookbook are free of gluten and the eight most common allergens thus taking the guesswork out of determining which recipes are safe and which are a risk. Culinary expert, Leslie Hammond teaches readers how to use naturally allergy-free ingredients and substitutes to add richness, texture, pizzazz and nutritional content to meals without losing the "yummy" factor.

Before Celiac, I was an avid baker. I baked all of our breads (my children never knew what store brought bread was), and that is one of the hardest things that I've had to deal with. The smell of fresh baked bread, the way it feels when you're making it, etc. With this book I have been able to get back some of that nostalgic feeling of being in the kitchen and creating something truly wonderful. I use this cookbook almost daily and share it with anyone I can. I have tried many many other cookbooks and got so discouraged that I didn't want to try anything new. The smell of garbanzo bean flour was enough to make me stop using it. Not to mention the lead weight that came out of the oven every time I tried to bake with 4 or even 5 different flours. Thank you Roben for simplifying baking but while still providing my family with delicious treats from our kitchen. This book is truly a treat for anyone with gluten intolerance, celiac, or various other food allergies. Yeah for being back in the kitchen!!! Heather Jones
